The 1938 hunting season closed Wednesday at midnight in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Scarcity of small game and poor weather led many to rate the season among the poorest in years. Rabbits were more available in the north, while upper Michigan kept a longer season into January.

Charles W. Perry aged 84 pioneer attorney of Clare died at home after weeks of illness. Born April 11, 1846 in Genesee County, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1877 and moved to Clare to practice. Survived by wife Elizabeth Merrill, he helped organize Clare County Savings Bank and served 43 years as its president. He was mayor of Clare and prosecuting attorney of the county, and once led the Michigan Bar Association. Funeral held at his Clare residence with Rev H B Johnson officiating. burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery.
A 50 man US Marine patrol was attacked near Wehuapa in Nueva Segovia. Eight Marines were killed and four wounded, with two wounded later reported recovering. The attackers were led by Miguel Ortiz of Sandino allegiance, targeting telephone line repair near the front. The incident prompted calls in the Senate for potential withdrawal and raised Latin American tensions.

Charles I. Curtiss of Winn is named as a Michigan representative to the American Road Builders Association annual congress. Governor Fred Green approved the appointment announced at the courthouse. The road congress, to be attended by many national road leaders, convenes January 12 for five days.

In 1930 arrests topped 261, six months saw 90 of 95 arrests resulting in conviction. two dismissals and three pending.
The Guardian Detroit bank announced a new high total of 124 million 96 thousand 977 dollars and 65 cents in deposits at December 31, up about 9.5 million dollars since December 24. The bank is a major unit of Guardian Detroit Union group in Michigan.

Ernest R. Dexter became county clerk and Gerald J. Cotter was named county prosecutor at the Isa Bella Court House this morning marking the start of two year terms. Appointments included Mannie Ty Young as clerk for the road commission and Bess A. Foland as deputy clerk. Mrs Foland succeeds Mrs Fred Thomas who plans to retire, while Mrs Thomas will stay in the office temporarily. Sheriff Schertel listed few changes, with 16 deputies currently and possible overall reduction. Charles Baumgarten was named deputy to work with the sheriff at local headquarters, replacing Addison Hulse. William Cahill and Charles Barber received reappointments in their respective townships.
