Philadelphia crowds prepare for the annual New Year parade led by King Momus. Costume makers, clubs, and organizers race to complete dazzling outfits as 15 plus clubs march on Broad Street. Prizes total 325,000 with about 15,000 marchers aiming for historic, traditional displays.
United Press reports Michigan Bell will spend about 952 million in plant extension for 1930. President Veraker states increased long range investment to boost telephone service nationwide, with 20 million for land and buildings and further funds for central office equipment and lines.

In December the Conservation Commission dedicated sixteen new wildlife sanctuaries across eight southern Michigan counties, renewing three more for five years. The ventures total 4,689 acres, with 3,871 acres backed by the Izaak Walton League's Manistee County Chapter. Renewals cover Kent Osceola and Bad Axe areas, while dedications span Oakland Eaton Newaygo Ingham Charlevoix Manistee Ottawa and more, including multiple acreages and terms from five to 25 years. Former Governor Albert Sleeper turned 67 at his Bad Axe home, stating he remains young in spirit.
Detroit January 1 The trial of Marty Cohn for involuntary manslaughter in the Study Club cabaret disaster recalls a possible arsonist. Police arson Sgt George W Stwith testified he saw a man with odd eyes loitering near the club after the blaze. He noted a man wrapped in fake bandages posing as a fire victim was arrested and questioned then.
Detroit January 1 United Press reports Recorder Charles L. Bartlett denied Jimmy Fernando's plea for a new trial in the kidnapping of 5 year old Jackie Thompson. Fernando remains imprisoned in Jackson. Attorneys said they will appeal to the State Supreme Court. Thompson was held 24 days and returned to his father for 25000 dollars.
Speaker Longworth says the House will follow its normal procedure and send the Senate tariff bill to a conference after passage. He dismisses current reports that Democratic leader Garner is forming a coalition with Western Republicans to push the Senate version in the House.
In Pontiac on January 1, sharp exchanges between Henry and Wilfred Lelands and Henry and Edsel Ford dominated Circuit Judge Frank Covert's courtroom as attorneys argued a defense motion to dismiss the amended bill in a 6 million dollar suit against the Fords. William Henry Gallagher and Clifford Longley led the verbal clashes over unkept promises.
At least 700000 has been saved and nine buildings not in the 1928 1929 appropriation are erected or near completion. K A Johnson in charge says convict labor and admin efficiency under late superintendent Charles D. Frazier saved Michigan funds. Legislature allotted 2771106 for prison construction. only 1959100 spent. Additional additions and a tuberculosis hospital planned for 1936.
Ralph Aldrich of Monroe is under a first degree murder warrant after allegedly confessing in Wauseon, Ohio, to killing Frank Miller, Petersburg village constable, during a farm chase of chicken thieves near Deerfield on Oct. 28. He admitted further chicken thefts across Michigan and Ohio and will be returned to Fulton County in a few days.
After midnight tonight January 1 practically all hunting and trapping seasons on protected animals and birds in the lower peninsula are closed until next fall. In the Upper Peninsula rabbit season remains open until January 31.
Lansing reports many individuals and fishing clubs have submitted requests to the Fish Division seeking changes in trout stream status for 1930. Most requests aim to reopen streams to fishing while others seek closures for conservation. Each request is forwarded to the respective district conservation officer for recommendation and then considered with existing division records before recommendations to the Conservation Commission.
Prosecutor James E. Ryan released figures showing 145 convictions and 0 arrests in the last six months of 1929. Of six other cases two were nolle prossed, one acquitted, one discharged on examination, and two settled. Convictions covered drunkenness city and state violations, assault and battery, prohibition, fishing, larceny, and other offenses.
In Phillipsburg Ohio a gang tried to force the bank vault code on Ralph Davenport the First National Bank cashier. Floyd Davenport age 14 alerted locals after the robbers menaced his parents with a machine gun. A armed posse gathered and engaged the bandits in a gun battle driving them away as they fled in their car.
A blaze swept a Paisley cinema on New Year’s Day killing many children and injuring others. Fire officials reported 69 bodies recovered with 100 plus in hospitals as rescue workers cleared the packed theater where a stampede trapped youngsters between main and side exits. Eyewitnesses recall dense smoke and a chaotic exit as rescuers battled to reach those inside.
Isaac Jewell 73 died in Jackson after stopping with his son Thomas to help Mrs. E. J. Beaton free a car from a snowbank. After freeing the vehicle Jewell lay in a pool of blood with a severely lacerated head, police suspect a slip and fall beneath the car as it moved away.
