Mrs Etta Mae Miller mother of 10 was sentenced to life in the Detroit House of Correction after being found a habitual criminal following four liquor law convictions. Judge Charles B Collingwood imposed the mandatory sentence in Ingham County Circuit Court. The jury reached its verdict quickly and Miller's attorney signaled an appeal arguing the statute unconstitutional.

New York January 1. Letters to the W C Durant prize committee proposed tortures for liquor law violators. Maj Mills former prohibition commissioner won the prize $25000. Suggestions included hanging violators by tongues on planes expelling liquor by hootleggers and shots of poison. One idea would expatriate violators to Saint Helena and others call for electric chairs seasick devices or marking windows with black notes. One pint of liquor could merit six months hard labor. Most proposals came from women with one suggesting liquor be free to remove allure.
