East Lansing, Dec 13. Farmers increase efforts to boost small grain yields in Michigan under the Ira H. Butterfield memorial grain growing contest begun in 1927 at Michigan State College. This year 148 farmers competed at the state fair in Detroit for prizes on a five acre tract. Varieties from college experiments dominated entries. 80 percent were college grown, 60 percent used legume rotation, and 85 percent applied 200 pounds of fertilizer per acre.

Lewis Hamilton Dies in Auto Crash After Heart Attack
Lewis Hamilton a 68 year old Fre mont township farmer died this forenoon while driving alone near Winn. He appeared to suffer a sudden heart attack causing his car to leave the road and overturn. Sheriff and coroner said injuries were from the crash but heart attack was fatal. He had long lived in Isabella and Midland counties and ran a mill delivery service at Shepherd. He is survived by his wife two children a step son and a step daughter.
