Athens and Piraeus face the worst dengue outbreak, with up to half a million already affected. Reports indicate 80 percent of residents in the two cities are ill or recovering, while spread to provinces increases and Turkish authorities prepare border measures.
Peggy Groulx age 17 was killed and Cynthia Ryan about 17 was injured when the car they rode in struck a concrete abutment near Sebewaing while en route from Bay City to Bay Port. Groulx died at once and Ryan sustained serious but non fatal injuries. Both had been recently employed at 42 local restaurant.
Mrs. Amelia Facteau files a DC Supreme Court complaint against John R. Ragland claiming a goose attacked her after church, causing $10,000 in damages. She alleges injuries including a cut chin and a fractured wrist, and cites adverse effects on her nervous system from the incident.
Detroit officials offered no comment on who ordered the wrecking of the pier ballroom floor at Belle Isle bridge entrance. Workmen demolished the floor with axes under police protection as city efforts to close the ballroom for a public park face an injunction.
Westport Indiana August 29 Mrs A F Hamilton lost her wedding ring while gardening thirty one years ago. She found the ring again while digging potatoes.
The car belonging to Lewis Thayer of Vernon township was stolen last night from Coleman streets where Thayer and neighbor John Stough had parked it. Paul Pischel later drove the car into Clare garage for pipe work and it was identified as Thayer’s. The driver was held by Clare county authorities for theft.
Helen Wills, world’s premier woman player, will showcase her talent in Detroit on September 19 at the Detroit Tennis Club. Officials confirm her participation and say she would stay an extra day if rain interrupts the exhibition.
Thomas W. Bigger state athletic commissioner pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated and posted $200 bond for a September 6 hearing after a night of erratic driving in Battle Creek. Police say he bumped another car, a tire blew, and he asked an officer to fix it before being arrested. He shared a jail cell with an insane man awaiting state admission.
Robbery at the Rosebush Standard Oil station by two men yielded about $35. The suspects abandoned a Chrysler in Mt Pleasant and stole J S Battle’s Buick from Broadway. Officers extend searches across counties as they pursue the fugitives and recover the abandoned Buick at the county jail. The Battle car had been reported stolen from Lansing via Henry Gignar.
Mexico City indicates it would accept in principle the Kellogg anti war pact. The invitation to join was extended yesterday to Foreign Secretary Estrada by U S Ambassador Morrow.
A Pennsylvania Railroad Chicago bound passenger train struck a large casting on a parallel track, killing fireman R. D. Shreeve of Pittsburgh and injuring Charles Greese, also of Pittsburgh, who cooled the switch and helped stop the train. Passengers remained unharmed as the damaged engine was replaced and the train continued to Chicago.
Governor Fred W. Green accepted the resignation of Thomas W. Bigger as state boxing commissioner and named James M. Brown, PE instructor at the state normal college in Ypsilanti, to succeed him. Louis Gabowsky of Muskegon was appointed to the state athletic board of control.
U.S. Senator Arthur Vandenberg told Benton Harbor residents that Governor Tred W. Green showed character by facing a state deficit, not lowering taxes with false promises, and fighting crime with a tougher penal code and parole policy. He praised Green’s highway program and cut huge appropriations by five million dollars.
Paris August 29 United Press reports feminist leaders praised a protest in front of the presidential palace gates at Ramoubillet where 10 members were arrested during a push to confer with visiting diplomats about an equal rights clause in the Kellogg anti war pact. Doris Stevens described the action as splendid and proud.
Former Harvard professor Dr. Horace M. Kallen faced possible prosecution under a 230 year old blue law in Boston. Judge Michael J. Murray withdrew the warrant and ordered further investigation after Kallen’s remarks at a Sacco and Vanzetti memorial service last week. He allegedly said if Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists, Jesus Christ was an anarchist.
In California 1920s style coverage, Hiram W. Johnson leads the Republican senatorial race by a wide margin as returns from more than half the precincts show him up by over 400,000 votes on rival Charles Randall of Los Angeles.
A torn note claiming to come from Jack Frost and Gordon Scott, two of the Dole flight crew aboard the Golden Eagle, was turned in to Redondo Beach police. The message, found in a bottle, described drifting 2,000 miles southwest near the Desert Island area and asked for help. Police doubted the note’s authenticity and did not verify the motorists involved.
A large Curtiss air fleet set out from Cur tiss Field to find M Merrill and Edwin M Ronne after they vanished Monday while flying Lindbergh’s Falcon toward New York. The rescuers, led by Casey Jones, formed a V formation over the Buffalo route as officials fear they ran out of fuel in a five hour supply.
SAYNER Wis Aug 29 Mrs Charles Hoeffer 69 Kansas City Mo collapsed and died of a heart attack after watching her husband drown while trying to save a young woman in Plum lake. The three bodies were taken to Wausau for burial and investigation.
Mrs. Mary A Younger, 57, of Lincoln township, died after flames from an oil stove set her clothing ablaze. She was alone but cried for help. neighbors arrived quickly, and she survived about four hours after the fire started, giving an account of the incident. The funeral is set for Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Baptist church, with burial in Green cemetery.
Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, originator of the Pact of Paris, departed Paris for Ireland to the cheers of several thousand strands of supporters. Crowds lined routes from Paris to Havre, applauding the American official as he left.
Coast guard boarding of the private yacht Buddy on August 22, owned by Cleveland magnate Bramley, was judged entirely justified by M W Rasmussen head of the Lakes Erie and Ontario division. He dismissed claims that cutter 2321 rammed the yacht and said the owner, who pleaded ignorance of the law, was fully satisfied after talks with Rasmussen and others.
Detroit patrolman Carlin McPherson woke to his wife’s screams and arrested two burglars in his house. He put on his uniform, sat the intruder in a chair, and escorted him to the police station after the daring night confrontation.

Four negroes are missing after three buildings collapsed in Shelby North Carolina. Six people died and twelve were injured, with three of the injured in critical condition. Search found no trace of the missing men, believed buried under debris.
Palmer Landon former Isabella county sheriff and recent state conservation agent has been named United States deputy game warden. He will keep his state job and reside in Mt. Pleasant, continuing to serve local conservation efforts.
Racine Wisconsin August 29 United States Senator John J Blaine denies urging the election of Governor Fred I Smith. He says his remarks were not a personal endorsement and focuses on Wisconsin progressive primaries on September 4 while dismissing national election implications. He notes partisan concerns should not bind voters and cites scandals in the Harding administration.
William J. McKone 62, former member of the state board of education and state welfare commission, died at home in Jackson after a stroke. A Michigan educator, he led schools in Morrice Almont Albion and Mason since 1887 graduate of Michigan State Normal College. Funeral services are set for Thursday.

The store will sell furniture and related lines and occupy the entire building except the second floor leased to the Knights of Columbus. Lynn R Harris will be resident manager and move here soon. remodeling starts immediately.
A 19 year old Detroit entertainer Miss Burke was assaulted early this morning after a moonlight steamboat trip. Two men forced her companions out and drove off with her. The attackers robbed her of about $600 and $50 from her handbag. She was left bruised and taken home by taxi and is recovering.
In Lima August 29, residents demand intermissions between reels, with one theater installing two projection machines but using only one. Patrons chat, smoke, and view neighbors during breaks.
