The 18th Isabella County Fair opens with strong early interest as entries near Wednesday noon. Cattle and poultry exhibitors fill stock barns and the agricultural building buzzes with activity while a balloon ascent and parachute drop are planned for Friday and Saturday.
George Lord former state tax commission member told the state equalization board the current method of apportioning taxes is a farce. He urged reducing Oakland county's share and proposed alternating five year valuations with a study of Michigan property cash value. He pressed for Oakland county valuation at 400 million dollars, down 82.6 million from the commission figure.
A theater panic in Pearlboro New Jersey followed an explosion in the projection booth after a report of fire. Two women and a child were injured in the stampede, Anna Moore 26 May Clark 9 suffered broken legs, Rose Benvenuto 30 fainted and was bruised as flames caused about 20 dollars in damage.

Norman Sherratt and John Neven of Toronto were convicted by Magistrate H. A. Burbidge for a midday hold up at the Cortridge street Royal Bank of Canada in Hamilton. They were sentenced to six years in prison and 30 lashes. The robbery occurred yesterday afternoon and involved a getaway car with 3,000 in cash.

William C. Durant will return to the presidency of Durant Motors, Inc. and the company will manufacture 100,000 Mathis midget cars in Lansing, Michigan, to enter the American market at about 500 dollars delivered. New officers include E. B. Mathis as president and R. A. Vail as vice president with Roberta C. Renshaw and Edward Varlinden named to the board.
Bernard Rawson a 22 year old pilot and four passengers Miss Florence Davis Cleo Slagle George Commons Bowfield Ward escaped unharmed after the Northern Aircraft monoplane caught fire mid air between Farmington and Pontiac and exploded upon landing at Fourteen Mile road and Orchard Lake avenue. The group used a fire extinguisher but could not stop the blaze before the plane burned.
Windsor and seven nearby municipalities propose a total ban on imports of completely finished cars from outside Canada. The plan aims to boost Canadian auto production and reduce 4500 local job losses. It also calls for a government survey to expand domestic parts manufacturing.
Four people in a closed car drowned when a hand propelled ferry capsized on the Connecticut River between Westmoreland New Hampshire and Putney Vermont. The victims include Mr and Mrs Ray Austin and their year old infant from Putney and an unidentified man. The ferry operator Allison Cushing aged 70 said the bow tipped when the Austins car moved forward too far.
The City of Mt Pleasant Michigan invites proposals by August 25 1930 at 730 PM for constructing and equipping a water plant capable of delivering about 1 500 000 gallons per day from an underground source. Proposals require five percent certified check. City reserves right to reject all bids.
The public schools will open Tuesday morning September 2. High school students above eighth grade meet at 8 30 in the auditorium. Ninth graders need not appear before, but 10th 11th and 12th graders transferring from other schools should attend on Thursday Friday or Saturday of next week to see Principal L C Wendt with official transcripts if possible. Senior students classified last June may seek changes before opening. reclassification matters can be handled then. Rural students seeking admission who need work should report to Supt G E Ganiard.
Evanston chief of police William Freeman admitted taking 400 from gangster Jack Zuta to cover a legal loss. Investigators cited Zuta ledger entries linking officials to the crime syndicate and named Chicago Daily News editor John Craig in a related cash dispute. Freeman denied official favors and pledged repayment, amid broader graft probes.
Hamtramck may shift from a mayor recall to a grand jury probe into sponsors of the move to oust Mayor Rudolph Tenerowicz. City Attorney William Cohen announced the plan after reports of wholesale fraud in the recall drive. City Clerk Michael Grajewski found 1,112 of 2,418 petition names non existent or forged, with 1,025 genuine signatures.
Captain W. R. Meyer of the Matson liner Ventura receives a hero’s welcome in Pago Pago Samoa as the ship arrives with 251 Tahiti survivors. The Ventura sped 700 miles across the Pacific to rescue passengers after the Tahiti foundered off Australia.
In Tarboro North Carolina Oliver Moore a 35 year old Black man accused of attacking two white girls was lynched by about 200 men who stormed the Edgecombe county jail early today. Deputy Sheriff R O Watson said the mob battered down the doors and took the prisoner. It was the first lynching in North Carolina since 1921.
Curtailment of crude oil production continued nationwide as the Oil and Gas Journal notes a drop in the national daily average from 2,478,259 to 2,458,005 barrels. The decline totals 25,254 barrels with a light oil decrease of 22,384 barrels.
Two Alma fishermen Charles William and Russell Nummer were jailed after being found fishing with two poles at Stevenson's lake. Deputy game warden Russell Nummer helped arrest them. Fred Thomas, conservation officer, reported the case. Each man faced fines and costs totaling 17.10 in Justice Wardroy’s court Monday afternoon.

Actions target moving livestock from affected areas and feed into drought districts with penalties for dealers charging excess prices.
In New York on August 19 John O Connor volunteered to answer a liquor charge against his brother Eugene and bear the punishment. The judge was not fooled as John received 16 days for contempt of court while Eugene was fined 100 dollars upon his appearance.
