President Coolidge hailed the Kellogg antiwar treaty as a landmark toward international peace. Addressing 15 000 at the Wisconsin American Legion convention in Wausau he said the pact could prevent future wars and urged more nations to join the agreement renouncing war as policy.
Hoover’s acceptance speech drew telegrams and letters from business leaders and welfare group members who had little prior political prominence. Four Republican senators sent congratulations, three others endorsed the speech, and few cabinet members or House Republicans offered praise.
Miss Pearl Johnston hosted ten young ladies at a lawn party on South College Avenue in honor of Mrs W T Campbell newly returned from her honeymoon. The shower featured many beautiful gifts and the Campbells now reside at their home on Oak Street.
A warrant charging Roy C. Toombs, president of the International Life Insurance Company, with grand larceny of 104000 dollars in bonds from the company, was issued in St. Louis by Circuit Attorney Howard Sidener.
Clare Aug. 15 Two persons were instantly killed when two automobiles collided at the intersection of U S 10 and U S 181 detour about 30 miles west of here one mile west of Hersey. The dead are Cloy Denslow 81 and Mrs Clara Denslow 80 both of Weidman Mich Otis Denslow husband of Cloy suffered a broken leg. Mrs Denslow and Miss Edith Loomis were injured. The other car occupants from Fort Wayne Ind were uninjured. The Denslow car was said to be speeding down U S 10 when the Indiana car halted then entered the highway. The Denslow car rolled over several times into a ditch. Both cars damaged.
About 250 Pennsylvania farmers will visit Northern Michigan seed potato operations on Aug 22 and 28. The group travels in 10 Pullman cars lacking dealers, inspects fields in Antrim Otsego counties, tours Mackinac Island, and hears talks by state agricultural leaders before returning to Pennsylvania.
Archie N. Case lieutenant governor of the Michigan Kiwanis club will plant the first tree at the official dedication of the Michigan Kiwanis forest in Tosco county on September 21.
In New York on August, Rev. Dr. John Roach Straton’s widely publicized debate with Governor Alfred E. Smith collapsed into a tail spin. Straton vows to push the issue, hiring a large venue to renew his charge that Smith is a foe of moral progress, while Smith refuses to engage outside Calvary Baptist Church.
Grave apprehension of floods in the Indus valley was renewed today as Wazir of Leh warned the Punjab government at Lahore of imminent danger. Through telegraph messages the town head of Leh reported rising levels and potential flooding in towns north of the Himalayas.
Detroit August 15 An order calls a grand jury investigation into graft rumors tied to selecting a site for Wayne County's 2 million dollar airport. Hearing scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday before Judge G A Miller.
East Lansing Aug 13 Ten thousand applications for Michigan State college football tickets have been mailed to alumni and state football fans, as announced by the college.
Paris Aug. 15 Suzanne Lenglen declares she will play tennis only for friends and family. Pete Lenglen says she has hung up her jackets and will likely never appear before the public again. He adds a match with Miss Wills is unnecessary and probably harmful to French sport.
In Columbus reports from the Ohio primary show James T. Begg of Sandusky and Myers M. Cooper of Cincinnati leading the Republican gubernatorial race as returns arrive. Both men are dry advocates with Cooper and Begg ahead of General Edward C. Turner, who faced opposition from the Anti Saloon League faction.
Rockford, Aug 15. Bert Hassell announced the postponement of at least one day for the hop to Sweden due to unsatisfactory weather in Canada. Hassell and navigator Parker Cramer planned a 750 mile first leg to Coghrane Ontario with a 1,600 mile follow up to Greenland.
CHICAGO August 15 Hans Pape 25 charged with burglary killed today while escaping from a police squad car. Report notes a boxing and skating earnings comparison with Suzanne, and French critics remark on Suzanne’s changing playing weight and Cannes 1926 performance.
The 4th annual Tygart family reunion gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs Thomas Tygart on Anderson Street. Two birthdays were noted for Thomas Tygart aged 83 and his daughter Mrs C M Smith of Lenton. A business meeting elected officers and announced plans to meet again with Mr and Mrs Stanton Quackenbush next year.
Eight Michigan 4 H club members received honors for advancing the program. Named are Mary Richmond Hemlock Emil Kober Gonklin Harold Strange Grand Raunds Leona Gale Ypsilanti Verna Norberg New Era Eva Raser Pulaski Raymond Gearbach Saline Isabella McKellar Freeland. Also listed are Mildred Walsh Ann Arbor club leader and A EB Normberg father of a member.
Governor Fred W. Green spoke at the Ionia Fair, reviewing his administration’s finances and policies. He defended his record on taxation, agriculture, salaries, and buildings, and said enemies are a sign of his effort. He criticized Groesbeck era finances and noted a 1928 court ruling affecting corporate taxes.
Cleveland August 15. No further arbitration will be attempted on the wage dispute between trainmen and railroad officials operating west of Chicago. A F Whitney president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen said 35,000 members are voting on a strike with results due September 2. A general strike would involve about 70,000 western trainmen depending on the vote.
Paris August 15 Experts differed on Captain Alfred Loewenstein Belgium financier whether he was poisoned. Dr Raul who studied the corpse after landing at Boulogne found traces of toxic poison in the intestines. Prof John Abrest said the stomach held only normal meal remains and some sea water. Both reports submitted to Boulogne coroner's court.
A fleet of 25 rum boats based at Bridgeburg evaded the U S coast guard and delivered contraband on American sail. The vessels moved down the Niagara River into Lake Erie and are back at Bridgeburg awaiting re stock.
Former treasury secretary William Gibbs McAdoo said in Los Angeles on August 16 that he will issue a statement on party affiliations only after the Democratic nominees deliver their acceptance speeches. He declined to deny or confirm rumors of bowing out from the Democratic party.
The Johnson family held their first reunion at Island Park on August 11 with 186 attendees, including 40 families and 25 visitors. Officers were elected for a permanent organization, and the afternoon featured games, visiting, and a homemade moving picture exhibit by Floyd Johnson. Distances traveled by attendees included contributors from Ann Arbor Toronto Detroit Dearborn Gladwin Flint and Caro.
The Michigan Potato Growers Exchange will hold its annual meeting and banquet in Michigan on Wednesday and Thursday. An Adrian farm near Thompson is reported to host a marl bed 10 to 12 feet deep spanning about 20 acres, described as one of the finest marl beds by Art Bell of Michigan State College. Crosby Hoar, U S Forest Service inspector, visits the Upper Peninsula to review fire prevention and control work in Michigan.
Albion Michigan August 15 funeral services for Mrs. F H Goodrich daughter of Dr and Mrs George C Hafford were held at the Haf ford home on Irwin avenue conducted by Dr F S Goodrich. A Riverside cemetery service followed. Many local and out of town relatives attended including Dr Orin E Madison and Miss Eloise Hafford. Pallbearers were three brothers and two uncles among others.
Georgia faced serious flood damage as a tropical storm moved across the state with heavy rain. Florida reports the worst damage \"appeared to have passed\" but flood danger remained around the Okeechobee area as the Kissimmee River stayed high and potential canal overflows threatened downstream areas.
