The test flight seeks over 218 mph to qualify for the Schneider trophy race at Cowes on Sept 6 and 7. Williams set a 1923 world speed record of 266.6 mph, later surpassed by others.
Hundreds of last minute applications flooded the Graf Zeppelin offices at Friedrichshafen as the airship prepared for refueling and a round the world flight. All new applications were rejected. only those already scheduled will travel. Commander Hugo Eckener vetoed adding passengers to conserve weight for fuel and ballast.
In a Chilean snowstorm the Pullman train 50 miles from Los Andes remains isolated after 70 hours. Twenty two passengers and 10 railway workers are confirmed aboard with eight women and six children among the travelers. The railway reports sufficient food and fuel for several days, and officials call the storm the worst in years, halting roadway operations.
Washington August 12 The association against a prohibition amendment released statistics claiming rising liquor consumption since prohibition began. They cite charts on alcoholism deaths, alcoholic insanity, arrests for drunkenness, seizures of distilling equipment, and other liquor related effects though no direct production data is kept.
Washington Aug 12 The new tariff bill draft by Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee due next week would cut several key rates though overall aim is a general but not drastic reduction from House levels. Wool would drop to 31 cents, sugar to be cut, wood and shingles adjusted, logs kept at current rate, chemicals lowered, metals raised and agricultural rates advanced. The autos schedule shows a fallacy in percentage comparisons as rates move from 25 to 10 percent with the countervailing seven percent removed.
The reparations conference adjourned until Wednesday morning as debates over Great Britain’s proposed revision of Young Plan annuities stalled. Key speakers included German economics administrator Julius Curtius and Italy’s Signor Pirelli, with support from Ramsay MacDonald and Philip Snowden influencing the pause. Louis Loucher of France urged extending the talks, noting his own lengthy statement could not be completed that day.

Mrs Sherwood Badgett and her eight daughters plus E S Henry and family rode to the Dallas zoo. On return a Texas and Pacific train struck their truck near a grade crossing, killing 18 of 14 passengers. One daughter hospital bound, others aged 3 to 19.
Three American scientists travel to Mount Brukkaros in Southwest Africa to study variations in solar heat. A National Geographic Society and Smithsonian observatory atop the mountain feeds data to Washington for comparison with stations in Southern California and Chile to improve long range weather forecasts. The site, chosen for dryness and dust absence, uses an artificial cave to shelter delicate instruments from heat and light exposure.
Floyd Parks age 40 of Deerfield Center drowned in the Chippewa River while preparing for an afternoon swim with companions James Orcutt Daniel Rogers and two others. Rescue attempts failed. death ruled accidental drowning with epilepsy cited as a possible contributing factor. Funeral plans set for Tuesday at Deerfield Center church.

Children in the family are named for their birth year hence the baby will be christened as 1929 July Jones or July 1929 Jones. Parents note 1900 Jones lives in Baltimore while 1908 November Jones whereabouts are unclear.
