Dispatches from Batavia report that six villages on Paloeweh Island were destroyed by the eruption of the Rokkinda volcano. The disaster, centered in the island’s southwest, killed about a thousand people and injured around six hundred. Ships were said to have sunk near Celebes. Paloeweh is a Dutch possession.
Evanston residents join efforts in Seattle to solve the murder of Miss Constance, an English instructor, as police widen their hunt for suspects and a reward is offered for information leading to the killer’s capture.
Edward Pevitt a 13 year old drowned in the Tittabawassee River at Midland Bay while swimming toward a raft. He disappeared after an apparent playful grab on Frank Williams who also swam toward the raft. Life guards recovered the body within minutes but he did not survive despite resuscitation efforts. He is survived by his parents and brothers Lyle and Delbert.
A Greyhound bus traveling from Chicago to Cleveland left the pavement near LaGrange Indiana and rolled into a ditch injuring about thirty people. The driver was badly hurt after being blinded by the glare from a passing car and the other occupants were rushed to nearby homes and the LaGrange hospital. No name was obtained for the car's driver.
A 50 year old police officer named Bututita was shot dead today in the Itallifi quarters. The attack was carried out by two men using a slow pistol as investigators blamed Black Hand detivities for the fatal incident.
Governor Alfred E. Smith will attend funeral services for George B. Brennan in Chicago. He and his party depart Albany on the Twentieth Century Limited at 5 45 p m and return shortly after the services, arriving back in Albany tomorrow morning.
In Grand Rapids Michigan Lucian Imperia and his family of seven were taken for liquor sale charges. Local prohibition agents called police after the family resisted arrest with broken windows and riot police using a fire hose to protect the agents.
Production at the Pure Oil Company well east of Mt Pleasant has slowed to about 50 barrels daily. Crews plan to clean out the hole after identifying an obstruction, with a flow derrick built over the partially drilled Lilly farm well where a cyclone toppled the rig last week. Drilling resumes with expectation of reaching the same oil-bearing strata nearby within days.

Airplanes scoured the Coco river region near Bokay Nicaragua as marine patrols sought a group of rebels believed to be involved in fighting. One U.S. Marine was killed and four injured. tribal casualties included ten killed and three wounded. The fallen Marine was Meyér Stengie of Hartford, Corin.
Heat wave grips Detroit with temperatures around 86 degrees by 10 am. One death reported and eight people hospitalized due to heat prostration as forecasters warn the heat may ease later today.
Mrs Jennie Golden died at home Wednesday evening after thirty six years as an invalid. She was seventy one and widow of Joseph Golden with one daughter who died in infancy. Survived by brother Edward Greer and two sisters, with another brother James Greer deceased. Funeral Friday at two, Riverside burial beside her husband. She made artificial flowers and knitted extensively and was revered for her fortitude and courtesy.
Mecosta Tigers come to town next Sunday August 12 for a clash with the local team. Fans expect a thrilling contest as Mecosta seeks revenge for a recent defeat by the locals. Bremer and Nevitt likely will form the Mt. Pleasant battery. Mecosta impressed in recent wins over Greenville.
The Penn Athletic Club doubles sculls defeated Austria by two lengths to advance to the finals. Charles Melvaine and Paul V. Gastello clocked seven minutes 2.4 seconds. Other U S entries include Ken Meyers in singles sculls and two California and Penn Barge teams in the eight and four without a coxswain.
In Detroit on August 9 two rival cab firms Checker and United clashed again as Peace orders were issued by the traffic director. Two drivers were beaten and three arrested on robbery charges. A cab thief allegedly stole a car and pocketbook from a driver after being struck. The long rivalry recalls earlier years when Yellow Cab nearly vanished from the streets.
Palo Alto report says Republican campaign vigor will be reserved for the last six weeks before November 6. A Hoover spokesman says calm will be kept around his headquarters to avoid news flow and appease critics in the press.
Minnesota braces for more heat as 93 degree temperatures set a yearly record and three deaths with at least five prostrations are reported in St. Paul. In Rome, General Umberto Nobile met with Prime Minister Mussolini to report on the Italia airship wreck.

The boy admitted identity after state police influence revealing he was not from Detroit but from Mackinaw City and that his parents live there.
George E. Brennan, national Democratic leader, will be buried in a simple ceremony as planned by himself. Funeral services will be held tomorrow after his death from septic poisoning.
Austin Pat Navrin of Lansing piloted a Driggs two seater for seven hours and 37 minutes before a leg cramp forced descent. Adverse weather and tight fuel margins limited the attempt to surpass the existing light airplane endurance record set by Harry Brooks earlier this spring in Detroit.
Los Angeles California August court proceedings set to reimpose the death penalty on William Edward Hickman dubbed Fox the confessed murderer of 12 year old Marion Parker. The Los Angeles Superior Court will again sentence him to death by hanging after state and higher court rulings upheld prior penalties and denied a new trial.
By unanimous vote the Manistee school board asked Supt. Benjamin L. Klager to remain for another year. Klager resigned after a spring controversy and the board declined to sign a contract for Edwin M. Boyne, the high school principal who had made charges. Klager will consider the return invitation.
Governor Alfred E. Smith plans to answer Dr John Rauch Straton from Calvary Baptist Church in New York rather than Madison Square Garden where Straton voiced claims. Straton prays for guidance at Greenwood Lake and insists MSG would draw crowds.
New York August 9. A R W D Moore & Company, Wall Street brokers and members of the Jock Exchange, announced today the firm was unable to meet obligations and had failed. This marks the first failure attributed to the raging bull markets as stock fortunes swung rapidly.
Thomas F Logan 44 president of Logan Advertising Agency died early today in New York. He was known for his leadership in the Lord firm and contributed to local business circles.
An auction is set for Saturday August 11 at 1:80 p m at 1004 South Kinney Avenue Mt. Pleasant S C. Forney is the auctioneer and J W Aldrich will handle the proceeds.
The tropical storm moved from the peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico after a day of destruction across citrus counties and inland areas. Damage mounted to millions with towns cut off and lines down but no reported deaths or serious injuries as winds reached 60 to 80 mph near Tampa and coastwise vessels braced for possible delays.
At Orly air field in France on Wednesday night a tri-motor plane by Rene Couzinet crashed during a test for a Paris to New York trans Atlantic flight. Pilot Maurice Drouhin and a mechanic were killed. two other men were injured. The craft L Arc en Ciel was destroyed. Drouhin had been chosen by Charles Levine for a Paris to New York effort that never occurred.
Gene Tunney the retired heavyweight champion announces engagement to Miss Josephine Lauder of Greenwich Connecticut. Mrs George Lauder Jr presented the formal announcement in South Bristol Maine where Tunney is visiting at the Lauders summer home. No wedding date is set though it is expected in New York in late autumn or winter.
Rev Albert Waldron Yale aged 79 a prominent newspaper man in the middle west dies at his son Brennan Yale editor of the Wainesfield Chronicle home in Wainesfield Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Friday for 27 sailors and 2 officers killed when the submarine B-14 sank in the Adriatic after ramming the destroyer Missovi. The nation joins in mourning the 29 lives lost to drowning or chlorine gas fumes in a sequence of disasters including the Italia airship crash and a Rio aviation accident.
Hamtramck police report Frank Wroblicki aged 45 was killed in an early morning fight with Jose F Wichke. Wichke struck Wroblicki with an axe, causing his instant death according to authorities.
Cleveland Aug 9 Dr Bennet Allen University of California reports after 12 years of tadpole study removing the thyroid gland with a needle or knife prevents full frog development. Without the gland the tadpoles die or revert to a stunted form and fail to sprout into frogs.
