Berlin reports that Prussian government offices accuse a large French espionage network spanning the occupied Rhine area and reaching into unoccupied Germany. A government spokesman says the system covered political military and industrial activities.

Gertrude Hoffman placed third and Jane Fauntz was sixth but failed to advance.
Lansing reports that the general tax for 1928 will drop by two to three quarters and four million dollars after auditor general Fuller recommended cutting from 24.5 million to 20.5 million. The Administrative Board will act on Monday to set the 1928 tax amount, not to exceed 21.818 million, with taxpayers paying proportionately lower rates despite some counties not raising assessed values.

Grand Forks North Dakota August 8 Lieut Carl Ben Nielson of Hatton has agreed to accompany Sir Hubert Wilkins on the latter's proposed South Pole flight Announcement that he sent a message of acceptance to Wilkins in Los Angeles was made by Nielson Monday night while here as guest of honor at a banquet by local service clubs Nielson had been withholding his decision pending negotiations with Detroit interests regarding a flight over the Pacific to Tokyo He said his decision was made upon receipt of a message from Edsel Ford that delay was being experienced with preliminary plans for the Pacific.

Maj Clarence Young of the commerce department reports 4.25 million dollars will be spent this year to improve airways nationwide. Banks and firms expanding air mail use reflect rising demand and municipal airport funding via bonds.

A Lithuanian man Josas Lukaschius chained his feeble minded brother Jonas Stragauskas in a cellar for 22 years after selling him with the farm. The boy, kept in 15 kilogram chains, was rescued when a neighborhood girl reported him to authorities. Jonas survived amid scars and severe weakness unaware of the world war.

In 1914 to 1918 near a doomed prison Jonas was hospitalized after an incident. Stragauskas was arrested and tried but no witnesses appeared. Relying on Lithuanian legal code the court sentenced Stragauskas to two weeks in prison and a 500 Jitas fine.

In Williamsburg Virginia a military plane crash killed Sergeant Sidney Hawkins of Broad Axe Victoria and seriously injured Lieutenant James F Walsh of Farmer City Illinois. The crash occurred near the city today and authorities report both men were aboard the aircraft.
The Mt. Clemens notice reports thousands of blades being sent by mail and dozens in person from youngsters in a campaign. William G. Weaver, a florist, planned to use the blades to clean glass around his roses. A razor blade clears lime from a glass pane in 20 seconds, half the time of prior method.
