Lansing April 10 The Hartman mill tax bill and the Turner poor school district bill passed the House. The building program vote was 68 to 22. The Hartman plan would raise 28 million for a four year program. Senate concurrence pending. The Turner measure adds 2 million yearly for school tax equalization until repealed.
Ford Motor company reported a net loss of 72.22 million dollars for the year ending December 31, 1928. The firm showed a profit and loss surplus of 582.63 million, down from 654.84 million in 1927, with no dividends anticipated amid plant reorganization and volume production shifts.
Health officials report Mexican residents in Chicago face a death rate far higher than whites or blacks. About 30 000 Mexicans live in the city with projections of 100 400 within ten years if trends continue, according to Dr Benjamin Godberg.

Roy W. Butler of Kansas City and S. E. Gilbert Jr. of San Angelo, Texas, fled into Juarez seeking Rebel air force posts. Arrested as federal spies they were saved from execution by Gen. Escobar after two days as prisoners in Juarez and Jiminez. They described harsh confinement and hunger before release on Tuesday.
Frank Bowman of Hast Street in St Louis wants to pay taxes but asks who is owed. His land once islanded in the Okew River now lies as a peninsula crossing from St Clair to Monroe County. Both counties claim about 700 dollars in taxes.
No meeting of the county board of school examiners this month as the state now issues teachers certificates through the superintendent of public instruction. Two certificate grades allow three years of teaching. second grade requires one year training, first grade needs twelve weeks training and seven months teaching. Edward LaCross was arraigned in municipal court on a simple larceny charge after being caught stealing a nickel from a newsboy’s box. He was sentenced to pay a $15 fine or spend 10 days in jail.

Sydney, Australia April 10. A U P report states the search for the missing Southern Cross continued without result. Rescue aircraft flew over vast territory yet saw no sign of Capt. Charles Kingsford Smith and three companions despite reports from Drysdale River Mission that the plane was seen nearby. The Southern Cross has been missing since Easter Sunday after a forced landing on the flight from Sydney to London.
A United press report notes Col Charles A Lindbergh departed Brownsville Texas at 10 55 am continuing his Mexico City to east flight. A later San Antonio bulletin says concern rose when he was not reported at probable US landing points after 18 hours with border and airport checks inconclusive.
Calvin Coolidge accepted nomination as a member of the New Life Insurance board to succeed the late Myron T. Herrick. The move marks his first official activity since retirement on March 4, and he follows Grover Cleveland as a former president involved in life insurance. He will be elected at the board’s May meeting.
