United Press report from Lansing shows a $100000 bond measure to buy the old Masonic temple for a war veterans headquarters failing by a narrow margin after unofficial returns from 39 precincts 2201 yes 1763 no. A re check was requested amid tabulation errors before determining a final result. East Lansing notes MSU students begin final term as spring session continues.
The Michigan Supreme Court held that a father may hire his son without a labor permit. The case involved an insurance company ordered to pay double compensation after a son, employed while a minor, injured a finger. The court rejected the department order as overreaching, calling it astoundingly broad for ordinary family work.
The New York East conference of the Methodist Episcopal church unanimously adopted a social service report endorsing birth control. It urged New York and Connecticut legislatures to lift restrictions on physicians sharing birth control information for morality and sound scientific knowledge.
Complete returns from all townships show few changes on the county board roster. Two new supervisors appear Bruce Morrison of Wise and Arnold Kent of Fremont with a possible third. A coin toss decided the treasurer race in Union township after Maxwell and Prescott each had 102 votes. Broomfield cast a large vote relative to its population, with 245 voters participating.
In Union Township the election for treasurer ended with Myron I. Maxwell and Lloyd Prescott each drawing 102 ballots. A coin flip awarded the win to Maxwell. Other results: P. G. Hills beat Jason Kennedy for Supervisor 137 to 68. Zula Deane defeated L. S. Card for Clerk 129 to 74. George Robertson of the Citizens' ticket beat William Stillwell for Highway Commissioner 108 to 97. Alfred Whitehead defeated Wim Brandstetter for Justice 126 to 77. Wyman Welsh was unannounced for the Board of Review.
The regular Republican ticket carried in Rolland Township with only one contested office. Further details continued on page 5.
Detroit April 8 crowds continued to flood the city airport and a mammoth hangar housing 84 plane types at the All American Aircraft Show. A Stinson cabin plane with a Packard Diesel engine sold to a New York optical company after a government approved certificate was awarded. Tonight night flying demonstrations are planned as many exhibitors participate.
Youngstown stockholders meet to decide if Youngstown Sheet & Tube and Bethlehem Steel will merge into a billion-dollar conglomerate. Cyrus S. Eaton opposes the merger, citing inequities, after Federal Judge Tuttle denied an injunction.
Three British ship personnel died and three were seriously injured when a depth bomb on the destroyer Sepoy exploded prematurely during battle practice off Hongkong. Two bodies were blown overboard and later recovered by the Sterling crew. The Sepoy sustained some damage while the incident occurred amid fleet exercises.
Bay City Michigan April 5 a $65 000 fire destroyed the Island Lumber Co mill on the Saginaw river last night leaving one mill remaining in the city once home to 84 lumber mills. A northwest wind spread flames as firemen stretched a 2200 foot hose from the Cass avenue bridge to reach the burning mill.
An art exhibit of 200 photographs prints and color reproductions from Belmont mass arrives at the Junior High school assembly room April 24 and 26. Proceeds after expenses will fund wall decorations for local schools and the display aims to broaden public appreciation for art and its refining influence.
Lansing, Aug 8 United Press reports Attorney General Brucker said Miller case likely cannot be retried after the Michigan Supreme Court voided charges against about twenty liquor law violators due to a missing savings clause in the Cuthbertson act. The decision bars punishment under the act for pre August 27 offenses, affecting Mrs Etta Mae Miller who was granted a new trial in 1928.
Ruth Hanna McCormick, daughter of a senator and widow of another, seeks the Republican nomination as she faces Senator Charles S. Deneen in Illinois single biggest primary battle. With about 2 million voters going to the polls the outcome hinges on the decisive party choice tonight as candidates vie for the upper chamber.

Bart Denman a 33 year old Grand Haven theater operator and union official was held as a suspect in the Regent theatre bombing of March 17. His arrest followed the confessions of Roe Lawton and Raymond Buschman who aided in the Muskegon drive for the act, police officials said.
District music contest at Central State Teachers College on Friday April 11 will include 24 contestants from classes B C and junior high division. Class A from Mt Pleasant is cancelled due to insufficient entries. Winners advance to state finals in Ann Arbor May 2 and 8 facing Kalamazoo Ypsilanti winners.
