Mt Pleasant joined three Michigan cities in approving a capital punishment proposal by a clear precinct split. With about 2 000 registered voters, 881 ballots were cast. the measure passed the city while statewide it was rejected.
Captain Ira Eaker plans a 3 a m takeoff from United airport to fly to New York in 10 hours aboard a Lockheed monoplane. His prior attempt on March 10 ended in failure near Tolu Kentucky due to fuel pressure trouble. The coast to coast record stands at 12 hours 25 minutes set by Captain Frank Hawks on August 18, 1930.
Gallipolis Ohio April 7 Eight members of James White family perished in a log cabin fire at Swan Creek on the Ohio River ten miles south of Gallipolis. White 59 and seven of his children aged 20,18,14,9,5 and twins 8 were killed. George 12 escaped with severe burns and sought help from Gilbert Lake nearby.
Half of the Mt. Pleasant theft case was solved as H Campbell 523 North Fancher reported his car missing from Court street Sunday and later found it in his own garage. OG J Bristol 625 Pine street still lacked a locate by noon today.
In Lansing on April 7 the House committee on police and public safety moved the Culver whipping post bill after capital punishment was rejected at the polls. The measure lets judges add lashes to prison terms in felony cases with a strap at least 2 1/4 inches wide, up to six lashes at a time.
New Delhi April 7 Gandhi the Mahatma, leader of Indians in their independence movement, is understood to plan a visit to the United States after the second London round table conference. He will then proceed to London in mid June as sole delegate of Indian Nationalists to discuss a new constitution and India's political future.
Petoskey reports its first local smelt run as fish moved upstream in the Bear river last night and were harvested in large numbers this morning. City plans include a park along the river and a smelt dipping ground eight blocks long in the completed project.
London reports a high level meeting between British and German premiers and foreign ministers to discuss Europe's urgent economic and disarmament issues. The talks, aimed at aiding the 1932 world disarmament conference and League of Nations discussions, may address Germany’s push to reopen reparations talks amid changing global economics. Germany has signaled acceptance of Britain’s invitation. France is not invited due to recent discussions between Henderson and Briand.
The Clare Realty company an insurance business in Clare has been sold to Eugene A Throop and Clarence Caris of Vestaburg who will take possession Wednesday. The firm was once owned by ex Senator Tony Achard and was bought about two years ago by ex Sheriff A Crigier who died in a February car crash. Mrs Crigier has run the business with Mrs Minnie Caul, who will remain with the new firm. Mr Throop will reside in Clare and the firm will continue general insurance work.
Chicago April 7. Alexander 4H Legge resigned as Farm Board chairman to resume International Harvester presidency. He called reports of the board's dissolution premature and said the Farmers National Grain Corporation shows a 666,266.84 dollar profit for the year ending Feb 28. He warned against assuming the board's funeral and urged farmers to become big-time consumers as a path out of the national business slump.
Central State Teachers college reports a spring term enrollment of 994, with officials predicting a possible total of 1 000 after late arrivals. The prior spring term record was 916 in 1925, and 853 full-time students were recorded in 1980.
In Isabella county many townships held competitive races as the board of supervisors will largely stay the same. Waldo Curtis won Lincoln’s hot race, and Fred Campbell defeated incumbent John Watson in Denver. Voter patterns favored opponents of capital punishment and state amendments, with Mt Pleasant city showing strong turnout.
The Mt Pleasant city commission will enforce a two hour parking limit in the business district starting April 15 with warning signs to be posted. The rule was previously in effect last summer, paused for winter, and is intended to ease congestion. In Clare on election day R. I. Hether incumbent Republican won the mayoral race over Democrat L. H. Thompson by about 60 votes. Turnout set a spring record with 797 ballots cast. The capital punishment issue reportedly would be rejected in Clare County. In Harrison, Roberts Burns was re elected mayor without opposition.
A special Mt Pleasant city commission meeting is called to study Nation 1 Public Utilities proposed 30 year natural gas franchise. City Attorney James E Ryan is to present a revised draft this afternoon and may seek final agreements with the Chicago firm. If approved the franchise would go to voters in a special election. Rates are not a factor though cost reflections were discussed and gas could flow from the Vernon Clare field by July 1 if the franchise is granted promptly.
Windsor England April 7 King George receives an official update stating he is afflicted with sub acute bronchitis. He will remain in his room until weather improves while continuing to conduct state business. Doctors caution illness may become acute if resistance declines.
In Monday Daily Times a sub headline misstated the continuation partner. The text should say Mr Young continues the business with his son rather than Mr Francis. The body correctly reflects the intended fact.

About 200 American women and children from Managua arrived on the Chaumont at Balboa in the Canal Zone after a rapid voyage from Corinto. The home of Fred Thorpe in Leaton was seriously damaged by a fire that began Monday evening around five o clock. Neighbors assisted, confining most damage to the roof and the fire broke through there. Estimated loss stood at 200 pounds and was fully covered by insurance.
