Washington reports the air corps develops methods to keep planes aloft while other branches study how to shoot them down. Anti aircraft guns and three inch cannons promise fast fire and high altitude reach, with strafing planes and new streamlined high explosive shells replacing older shrapnel.
Auction notices list sales by John Gorman on April 6 at his Deerfield area residence with horses cattle hogs sheep and tools. Chas McCarthy as auctioneer. April 10 Mrs Tom Urie sells near Winn with implements feed and livestock beginning 1 PM. Geo Herman auctioneer. April 11 Archie Luce sells near Mt Pleasant on M 20 with horses cattle goats and implements beginning 12 PM. Davis McCall and Ken clerks.
Australian authorities pressed primitive rescue methods as four crew members of the Southern Cross vanish after a forced landing in the Drysdale river region. Native bushmen were sent from Forest River Mission to locate Captain Charles Kingsford Smith and his companions amid cannibal lands and tropical jungle.
About twenty members of the Marquette club, a local trout fishermen group, attended the banquet at the Park hotel. Walter Russell was elected president, E. E. Palmer vice president, and Fred Warner secretary. Highlighted were moving pictures of salmon fishing in New Brunswick and trout propagation in Michigan. The club owns a clubhouse on the middle branch of the Marquette river.
Chicago April 3 U P Structural iron workers will be paid for time spent climbing stairs ladders and beams to reach and leave lofty jobs after arbitrator Joshua D Hposito ruled in their favor. The decision covers workers on buildings over 12 stories and addresses claims they previously lost 15 to 20 minutes daily while ascending and descending.
Gov. Fred Green appoints Edward Voight of Escanaba to the state conservation commission from the upper peninsula, replacing Honard B. Bloomer of Detroit as part of a staggered term reform. The governor signs the new act raising the director’s salary to 7500 and notes the need for UP residency among two members.
Mexico's rebel warfare crossed the border as bombs from foreign aircraft hit Naco Arizona during a bombardment of the Mexican town. Ferry Baker of Alliance Ohio was wounded by shell fragments. Officials warn rebels and prepare orders for border troops to shoot down planes if attacks continue.
Omaha April 3. President Carl R. Gray of Union Pacific says speed wars in railroad passenger service are a thing of the past. He notes Great Northern cut Portland to Chicago time by five hours to 33 hours and says the transcontinentals will not pursue a price or time race as it endangers safety.
The speaker praises Bs. Bloomer for his commission service and securing state parts for Michigan but notes he has informed of personal and medical reasons against continuing on the commission. He cites wishes and business needs as factors guiding his decision.
Non fraternity students at the University of Texas publish The Texas Barb to oppose Greek societies. The paper targets local chapters and bans on-campus social events, naming students barred from activities for attending an unauthorized dance. A prior bill to bar fraternities in state schools was not voted on.
Governor Green signed the Watson bill ending life sentences for liquor law violators in Michigan effective immediately. The legislature pursued possible tougher penalties in a separate Guthbertson-Miner push, while a review to commute existing life terms was expected.
The Detroit Automobile Club reports Easter storm damage across Michigan. Many trunk highways and unpaved roads are impassable or very poor, with M-20 between Midland and Mt. Pleasant and US-10 between Midland and Clare cited as blocked. Gravel roads around Lansing vary from fair to very bad and several rural routes near Grand Ledge and Potterville are listed with poor conditions.
In Pasadena California police report a rising number of suicides by jumping from a city bridge. Chief Charles I. Kelley asked the engineering department to estimate the cost of installing life nets about ten feet below the span for budget consideration.
The News office reports readers from Mt Pleasant chose Robert Quackenbush and Byron Mayes as first and second prize winners in the subscription campaign. Quackenbush won a 1929 Pontiac Six and Mayes a overstuffed Mohair living room suite.
In Grand Rapids on April 3 Frederick Granger 12 and Gordon Elliott 11 rescued Mary Jean Worm 8 from Reed Lake after a high wind knocked her into the water. David 5, Mary Jean’s brother, alerted the scouts, who prepared to perform resuscitation. Frederick is recommended for national honors. Gordon will have a recorded deed of valor when he reaches scout age next year.
Gerald De King, 12, testifies at a coroner's inquest in Geneva that his mother was pistol‑gripped at a telephone when deputy Roy Smith shot her during a raid. The jury calls Smith to the grand jury for manslaughter and questions the raid’s legality.
Reports from Beirut to New York describe a violent Easter storm sweeping the Midwest and Atlantic coast. Seven lives lost as gales up to 72 mph toppled small buildings while extensive flooding and levee breaching threatened Illinois Wisconsin Iowa Missouri and Michigan leaving damages in the millions and transport disrupted from Detroit to Chicago.
The Daily Times reports a Republican landslide in Isabella county with most candidates winning by wide margins. Judge Ray Hart was re elected unopposed with 1286 votes, while city totals were not ready at press time and overall turnout was very light.
Rev Randolphe Petter a Mennonite missionary has worked 20 years on translating the Bible into the Cheyenne language. He has lived among the Cheyenne for eight years, twelve of them in Lame Deer Montana where he is based this spring.
The injured man testified about being attacked and beaten after which he regained consciousness and heard a taunt. He stated that no search warrant was shown when he requested to see one, and reported seeing someone say let's give him another.
