Victor R. Burton 41 deputy state highway commissioner died yesterday afternoon after a heart attack in Lansing. He served 16 years with the department except for wartime service, was educated at the University of Michigan, and was named deputy commissioner on January 8, 1929. He spoke to the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club on March 2 about the department.

Lansing April 1 United Press staff Frank D Fitzgerald secretary of state warned the state administrative board that weight and gasoline tax revenue for the first quarter of 1981 trails the previous year by about 2.5 million dollars raising the prospect of a serious highway budget deficit. He cited $2,250,000 in weight tax shortfalls and 150000 to 200000 in gas tax losses, blamed partly on a delayed license plate deadline. he warned contractors may not be paid after October 1 if the deficit persists. Three projects were approved: a Paw Paw bridge on US 12 for 21342, a 4.6 mile Huron county concrete stretch on M-29 for 128900, and a Kawkawlin river bridge on US 25 for 26246.
