On 14th the Mount Dora Observation Post youths Howard Nutter Buddy White and L G Simpson spotted a plane like a German warbird with a P 47 in pursuit. They alerted with a Red Flash and Lt Andrews of the AWS commended them as Florida’s first responders to a foreign look alike.
A community wartime appeal asks readers to support the third war loan. It links sacrifices such as gasoline, sugar, prices, and separations to safety and mission. Gold stars on homes symbolize casualties over 100000 and urge purchases of war bonds to shorten the war and reduce losses.
Lake County reports reaching the halfway point in its Third War Bond Drive. Four small communities Montverde Sorrento Cassia and Altoona surpassed the mark. Leesburg leads total sales and Sorrento leads by quota percentage. The Schools at War Cavalcade opens sales for Ee Children with tickets and jeep rides. over 400 tickets issued.
Mr. and Mrs. C. B. McFee move from Brevard North Carolina to occupy the Parker home on Fifth avenue. The retiree jeweler watchmaker will assist W. E. Lackey who has been indisposed, bringing experienced hands back into service at Mount Dorans.
The Sally Dress Shop begins operations with Mrs. Ruby Chapman and Miss Joyce Lane Thompson in charge until Miss Mary Dopkeen arrives from Whitman Massachusetts on the 29th with summer stock for an annual clearance sale. Remarkable bargains are promised.
Town Council held a special session on September 21 to approve participation in the Third War Loan. All members attended except George C. Keller. The Finance Committee, with the Mayor and Treasurer, authorized placing $22,000 in 2% Treasury Bonds through the First National Bank using funds from Light and Water departments and war improvement accounts.
The Battery B men led by Sgt Richard Krejci of Cleveland sang The Ninety and Nine with emotion and blended harmony with Sgt Ralph Dunbar of Youngstown. Next Sunday Krejci will perform Wonderful Peace and a male quartet will sing Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling.
The Service Men's Club hosted a formal dance on Saturday night September 11 with about 175 boys in khaki and girls in long dresses. Punch and cakes were served as Tommy Shipes and Jimmie Thompson attended, and old batteries were well represented. Attendance for the week ending September 12 was 301.
The School War Bond Cavalcade itinerary approved by Lt. Col. Zoller lists stops from Lady Lake to Altoona with a jeep ride for pupils who secure bond sale tickets. Local organizers will pick up principals’ designated assistants five minutes before arrival. deadline is the last minute before departure.
Montverde chairman C. F. Evans reports his town has surpassed its $1800 bond quota with Mrs. W. M. Cox authorized to sell E bonds. Montverde’s population is under 300 yet officials expect higher totals before the September 30 deadline. Lake County totals near the halfway point show countywide sales approaching the mid-mark toward a county quota of $1,292,755.
Tonight at 8 p m the Princess Theatre hosts a War Bond Premiere of Hers To Hold starring Deanna Durbin and Joseph Cotten. Free admission with a War Bond ticket bought in the Third War Loan Drive. 565 seats, few left. Local War Bond Drive chairman George J White will speak briefly and a furloughed local man may add remarks on war bonds' meaning to service members. Only one showing, no paid admission.
Mount Dora public school teachers and Methodist Church School teachers are guests of honor at the First Methodist Church morning service. Christian Education Week runs Sept 26 to Oct 3 with a sermon on wartime child welfare by Mr. Doggett. D D Roseborough and Richard Brown will introduce teachers. Parents are urged to attend. Rally Day and Promotion Day follow on Oct 3.
The Chief of Police reports a United States Secret Service warning for Jacksonville residents who receive or cash checks. Many allowances and allotment payments are going astray and are being cashed on forged endorsements, prompting heightened vigilance against mail thieves.
Kiwanis program sponsored by Al Rehbaum features school faculty visit. Miss Neal Miss Camp and Miss Bar deen discuss primary junior high teaching while Hall and Roseborough outline local aid and labor issues. A bond drive update by George J White, attendance prize winner, closes the meeting.
The Tavares High School band cannot perform due to graduation losses and missing key instruments. Ten graduates left, several others departed, and the group lacks a bass player and multiple drums, with junior band needs and instrument funding urged by the community.
As we go to press the Brooks family reports that their grandson James Aldermen is a prisoner of war in Germany.

Captain Harry Wise and wife hosted a Wednesday boat trip to Silver Springs. Attending were their son Sylvester and grandson Jerry, daughter and son-in-law Dale Hartman of Memphis, Harriet Wise, and guests Mrs. Ann Lord and Fletcher Crane. The group slept on the boat, fished for meals, and swam four miles behind the boat on the return voyage.
Yeoman Lyndon W. Owen of the Orlando Navy Recruiting Station will be in Mount Dora on Friday October 1 from 8 30 a m to 12 00 noon to recruit 17 year old youths for the Navy Sea Bees and women 20 to 36 for the Waves with headquarters at the post office.
The message urges every civilian to donate to the Third War Loan, explaining that war bonds fund rifles and ammunition and that individual contributions influence reaching a 15 billion dollar goal. It emphasizes duty, national effort, and the idea that idle weight harms wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
