Mount Dora notes its water comes from a deep well with a centrifugal pump and aerator. A minute chlorine addition safeguards the reservoir and a 1937 State Board of Health report found the bacterial and sanitary quality good based on samples.
Mount Dora Florida businessman I L Ronsheim recalls Middleton Ohio changes after nine years away while visiting his hometown. He notes shifts in development and local life since his 1890 return to Middletown to run a South Main Street store and later work with the American Rolling Mill core.
This fall the local high school football team enters the season with strong expectations. Coaches praise returning starters and the depth of the squad as key factors for a successful year.
Mount Dora hosts five active churches reflecting a moral, law abiding town. Baptists under Rev. Neslie V Underwood, Congregationalists led by Dr. A M Brodie, Methodists with Dr. Heber D Ketcham, the Church of God under Rev. G G Prince, and the Church of Christ on Rossiter Street all invite winter visitors and locals alike to year round services and programs.
Sargt and Mrs H W Shaw of Monroe Virginia have settled in Eustis and bought the J M Fosse poultry farm with help from A L Brown. Shaw is a retired U S Army sergeant and takes interest in Lake County poultry opportunities.
Judge A A S Herlong Jr spoke on the Constitution for Constitution Week and Paul Mahony discussed The World and Its Builders citing England Mexico Arabia and Northern Africa. Delegates to the St Augustine state convention October 10 to 12 were elected C J Brown Frank Burkart with alternates T M Kramer and G A Richardson. The On to St Augustine committee includes T M Kramer George Coffin and Frank Burkart. Guests included Howard E Nutter Carl Broom and R D Morris. Attendance prize went to J Brown.
The First National Bank of Mount Dora marks twelve years of service since opening on September 12 1913. President George J White cashier J M McCown and staff Harriet Banks Mamie True reflect on conservative management that saw the bank through the Depression. Directors include H H Mallory L R Heim Wm J Johnson J J West Alfred Rehbaum A J Waltz Geo J White Dr Robert W Dickson and J E Fortner.
The Doramek School football schedule lists games on Sept 24 at Eustis, Oct 1 at Dade City, Oct 8 at Tavares, Oct 15 at St. Cloud, Oct 22 at Ocoee, Oct 29 vs Apopka, Nov 5 at Umatilla, Nov 10 vs Lyman High near Daytona Beach, and Nov 19 vs Groveland.
The University of Florida began its 1937-38 session with Freshman Week as President John J. Tigert addressed students. Upperclassmen do not register until Saturday, with authorities expecting enrollment to reach at least a sizable figure.
In the write up of boys and girls leaving for college last week the name Tom Strickland son of Dr and Mrs Strickland was omitted. Thirty five from here will attend colleges this fall. Mr Strickland will attend Emory University Valdosta Ga for pre medical work. He graduated from Citra High School last June with high honors and had an essay published in the Topic this spring.
Mr. T. M. Kramer was taken to Umatilla Hospital Wednesday morning. Cause of illness not known.
Mount Dora Public Schools opened with 350 on the first day up from 325 last year and 100 more expected with winter visitors. New teachers were introduced and a heavy enrollment in commercial courses marked strong student and community interest. local Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, and Woman's Club active in civic projects and library support.
Eddie James and friends enjoy a private showing of sound motion pictures at the Grand View Hotel. Films include two from Bimini and blue marlin fishing near Cat Cay in the Bahamas. Louis R. Vasey and Erl Roman, noted for fishing exploits, appear in several scenes and their visit is warmly welcomed.
The Mount Dora Townsend Club will meet next Monday evening September 20 in the Community Building at eight o'clock to discuss special business.
Dr. Gerald A. Richardson was elected head of the Lake County Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons at a meeting held at the offices of Dr. S. C. Ball in Eustis last week. Dr. Ball was named vice president, Dr. A. L. Schumacher of Eustis secretary, and Dr. M. G. Hunter of Leesburg treasurer.
The J. J West Realty office notes a surge of winter rentals as new tenants secure homes for the season. C. D. Zeigler family from Jacksonville lease 1223 Donnelly Avenue, while Mrs Alex Hayes and son from Sewickley take Stewart’s home on Alexander Street. Lysle Stevens family rents Shaw home on East Fourth Avenue. arrival mid September. Minnie N. Spencer from Tampa settles at Sunny Corner for 1937 38 season. Frances Pemberton at Rehbaum Apartments for school term. Fred B. Rankin and family plan six months here, renting Crane home on Alexander Street and arriving about November third.
