Citrus Institute Plans Completed for One Day Meeting

Lake County growers sponsor a one day Citrus Institute at Eustis on Friday September 18 starting 10 a.m. with Florida Agricultural Extension Service oversight. The program replaces the war shortened Camp McQuarrie format and includes sessions on prices production costs and labor. A 3 p.m. Volunteers for Agriculture’s War Work gathering will also be held.

Red Cross mobilizes dressings and knitters in Lake County

Lake County Red Cross organizers set a September 15 start for surgical dressings with a 9,000 two by two inch sponge quota. Directors met at Leesburg to outline roomed production and emphasize in-unit work only. Volunteers from multiple communities join county efforts, with junior activities planned in Tavares and home service roles expanding in Mount Dora and Leesburg. Yarn quotas urge completion of prior knitted items before new yarn can be released to branches.

Lions Club Joint Meeting In Mount Dora Eustis District Leaders Attend

Lions Club and Eustis Lions shared a joint gathering in the Community Building with statewide leaders including Governor Collins Conner Pensacola District Deputy Harry Shad Gainesville and West Palm Beach Bob Blake. They noted a zone meeting in Orlando and praised the traveling delegates who covered 1600 miles. The September regular meeting followed at South Clayton street with Mrs. Lillian Banks honored for birthday duties and Lion Mosteller resigning due to time constraints.

Judge Herlong To Issue 1943 Driver Licenses Here

Judge Herlong and staff will be at the Chamber of Commerce offices on September 17 and 18 to sell 1943 driver licenses. Adults may obtain licenses for their families using a 1942 license, and licenses must be bought before October 1 with no extension. This local service avoids traveling to Tavares.

Red Cross Supplies Sought for Surgical Dressings Room

A list of needed items includes oil cloth yard sticks sewing machines and chairs to equip the surgical dressings room at the Red Cross Defense Room Orlando Army Air Base. I Woodworth field director and others met there for a conference while the Staff Assistant Corps logged 254 hours in August. A correction notes Mrs J G Miller remains with the Staff Assistant Corps but has resigned from Home Service.

Civilian Defense Training Held in East Town

A Sunday night class in East Town taught fire defense gas defense and the general C C D course to many Mount Dora residents. A Red Cross First Aid training session was organized. Special thanks to David Mac Duffie for organizing the group.

Red Cross Course Aims to Cut Accidents in Defense Effort

Servicemen Club Opens at Mount Dora Yacht Club

The Mount Dora Servicemen Club opened at the Yacht Club on Saturday with hospitality chairmen welcoming 47 men who signed the register. The club offers stationery, cold drinks, cigars, cigarettes, daily papers, magazines, and restrooms for the soldiers.

Mount Dora Girls Enroll at Stetson University

Two Mount Dora residents Miss June Fenn and Miss Evelyn Turrentine will join the Stetson University freshman class this month. They will attend orientation in DeLand on September 15 and complete registration on September 18 and 19. They will live in Chaudion Hall during the campus lodging period.

Keller Family Moves Through Banner Elk Visit

A letter from the Kellers reports they arrived at Banner Elk after visits in Johnson City Tennessee and Harrodsburg Kentucky. Mr. Keller has improved health and, after a brief stay at Banner Elk, will begin travel to Mount Dora arriving about the sixteenth.
