Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club Shines in August

Mount Dora's lawn bowling club drew northeastern attention with August gatherings and a second annual reunion in Yarmouth Maine. Members included W. H. Sprague and Dr. W. G. Downes, who helped Hartford's Fernleigh Club win the MacGuire-Locke trophy. New courts and planned winter events promise a busier season for year round members and snowbirds alike.

Tennis Club Plans Several New Ideas

The Mount Dora Tennis and Badminton Club plans to meet at Donnelly Park court in Clermont today at 4 o’clock. Officers were elected at the first meeting and a tentative program outlined. Charles Norris is president and will offer free tennis lessons at Donnelly Park each afternoon at 4:30.

Knights of Pythias Fish Fry Today in Mount Dora

This afternoon at five o'clock Lake side Park the Knights of Pythias and the Pythian Sisters lodge groups hold a fish fry and social gathering. A reunion of current and former members follows the event. At last night’s Mount Dora Lodge meeting the Esquire rank was conferred and next week’s meeting will award the Knight rank.

Epworth League Plans Winter Activities At Church

At a regular cabinet meeting of the Epworth League of the First Methodist Church plans were laid for a winter program. The group voted to donate fifty dollars to the choir for robes and discussed fund raising to support Institute travel. A monthly program is planned with events including a theatre party and various fundraisers from September through April.

Drake in Improved Health After Heart Trouble

W. H. Drake, once in poor health with heart trouble since November, has been on his feet for three weeks and fully recovered his condition. Friends report he is feeling better than ever and ready for another big winter season.

Mount Dora Out Of World Series As Season Closes

Mount Dora finishes the season by not qualifying for the World Series after a double header loss to Umatilla at Apopka. In the opener Stephens drove in three runs while Durden hit a homer and Durden and the defense contributed. The second game featured strong pitching by Miller and Adkins with Mount Dora errors piling up and Durden stealing a pair of bases.

Housewives are urged to complete shopping on Saturday to cover the long weekend. The Chamber of Commerce petition states all stores will close Monday for Labor Day.

Red Cross Closes Its Swim Campaign

The Lake County Chapter of the American Red Cross completed its Learn to Swim and life saving campaign at the Lakeside Pool with 71 swimmers finishing courses. Mary Elizabeth Simpson directed the effort with C. C. Dooley Jr. and Bob Quixley assisting, along with senior life saving students. Emblems must be ordered by September 3, and thanks are extended to Lakeside Hotel Properties, Mount Dora City water, the Mount Dora Topic, Frank Hard, the Mount Dora Police, and others for support.

Young People Choir Formed by Methodist Church

Every League member invites youths above eleven not in another choir to join the new Methodist Church young people’s choir. Auditions to classify voices are set for Wednesday September 7 from 10 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm at the church. Mrs. Esther Wyatt will lead auditions and direct the choir this winter. Parents may consult with her about training opportunities.

Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Conrad announce their son Paul has accepted a position with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in Barbeton Ohio. Dr. Conrad declined an associate professorship at Mississippi State College to join the firm in the Research Development division starting September with a good salary.

Killian Gaining On Ginther In Topic College Contest

Katherine Killian reduces the gap to Ossie Ginther in the Topic College Contest. Killian trails by 9 750 points this week with the contest ending September 16. Prize money includes a 250.00 cash scholarship and a 100.00 scholarship final, with two bonus prizes previously awarded for check up days. Both contestants leave for college during the last week, Killian to Florida Southern in Lakeland and Ginther to Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee.

Mount Dora Public Schools Resume with Opening Exercises

The Mount Dora Public Schools reopen Monday September 12 at nine o clock in the morning with public invited to attend the opening in the school auditorium. Students re enter or de part Monday morning as arranged by teachers. principal D D Roseborough will be in his office on September 8 and 9 for conferences with students and patrons. Andrews, Mount Dora Pioneer, Dies at 78

Howard William Andrews died at age 78 after a lingering illness at his Mount Dora home on August 28. Born September 18, 1860 in Brookfield Center Connecticut he worked as a farmer and estate superintendent. He moved to Florida in 1920 and helped found Mount Dora's Tourist Club later serving as its president. He is survived by his wife Bertha E Hasley. Funeral services were held at Rehbaum Funeral Parlors with burial in Brookfield Conn.

Legion Dance Set At Mount Dora Yacht Club

The American Legion hosts a dance tomorrow night at the Mount Dora Yacht Club as the first in a fall and winter series to aid local schoolchildren. Andersons Ali gators swing band will perform with a small ensemble and proceeds go to charity. free punch and a floor show are planned.

Mr and Mrs C C Dooley returned Tuesday from a six weeks vacation in Waynesville NC. They report delightful weather and Mr Dooley has acquired a setter. He will resume his duties as local postmaster at once.

Cameras clicked as crowds gathered at the University of Florida pool for a retro swim day. Spectators laughed at 1908-era outfits, a man's bathing suit and a lady's wine dress, alongside modern day swimwear.

Improvement Shown In School Library Circulation Rise

Library circulation in the high school rose 23.4 percent from the first to the last semester. An average of 363 books circulated daily with a year total of 6 434. Attendance averaged 153 daily and 91 percent voluntary. Inventory lists 2389 books 23 periodicals 257 pamphlets. Gifts from several supporters aided library projects including cataloging and refits.

The 1938 Florida Gators football squad begins its practice phase as enrollment tops 3 000 with about 1 000 freshmen and 2 000 other students. Night games debut at Gatorland on the last Saturday of September drawing in crowds from across the state.
