Annexation Lines Redrawn for Mount Dora Referendum

Lake Gertrude Manor is removed from the annexation plan as the council suspends fire protection for residents who oppose joining the city. A referendum on December 14 will decide annexation, alongside elections for four council members, the mayor, and two Park Commission seats. Voters must live in the area and be qualified, registered voters to vote. The eligible area includes Sylvan Shores, Helm Road corridor to the city, and Limit Street to the O. M. Simpson property.

City Council approves a 528 259 dollar budget for the new fiscal year starting November 1 with expected revenue 528 513 20 and a 258 20 surplus if estimates hold. The plan relies on utility profits and a 10 mill property tax plus cigarette tax rebates to balance a 78 915 debt service and broad departmental allocations.

Willmott Seeks Re election for City Mayor

Mayor Jesse Willmott announced he filed a petition to seek re election contingent on obtaining 25 signatures. City elections are set for December 14 with incumbents Willmott Champion Schubert Wason and Morgan facing re election odds. Margaret Lafroos has filed to run for City Council and Schubert has filed his petition while Champion will not seek another term and Wason and Morgan consider themselves doubtful candidates.

A beer license request for East Town on behalf of Henry Thomas was tabled Tuesday night by the City Council. Council President J P Turner urged deferral until zoning recommendations come from the planning consultants.

Normandy Paving Put Off By City

City Council delayed paving on Keeney Drive after adjacent property owners asked for street paving. Officials indicated a favorable move may come after records are checked to prioritize other streets. Most property owners on the unpaved stretch want the city to cover one third of the cost with neighbors paying the other two thirds.

IceHouse Theatre’s Mount Dora Origin and Growth

A Mount Dora community gathered on Sept 17 1948 to form the IceHouse Players later staging shows in a renovated Charles Street ice storage building. Key figures included Celia Shaw Gordon Goodrich and Jon Barker with early leadership and dreams of a purpose built theatre. Ten years later in 1958 the company opened a new Unser Street theatre with a growing 1200 member base and ongoing fundraising for expansion and programs.
