Final Rites Held For Arthur Pitts

Funeral services were held for Arthur R. Pitts a 16 year old Mount Dora High School student found dead Friday night in a swimming pool dressing room. Investigators ruled the death a suicide by hanging. He recently moved to Mount Dora from Birmingham Alabama and was a member of the Mount Dora Swim Club and First Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents two brothers a sister and other relatives. An inquest was held in Tavares to determine circumstances of his death.

Florida Revenue Commissioner J. Ed Straughn reported 2 032 715 gallons of gasoline sold in Lake County in September, generating tax receipts of 142 290.05 dollars, about 5000 dollars more than the same period in 1964.

Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club Sees National Standing Rise

Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club, with 14 rinks and a modern clubhouse, ranks high in Florida and nationally for membership and play. The club’s growth began in 1920 after Hartford entrepreneurs visited, with early boosts from Willard M. Bryant and Fred S. Thompson, and a 1928 dedication. In 1963 14 rinks were upgraded with Rubico surfacing and lighting, funded by a $15,000 drive and city support, making Mount Dora a regional bowling hub and social center.

Whittington Joins Lake County Junior Safety Council

Mount Dora High School senior Allen Whittington is among ten county youths named to serve on the Lake County Junior Safety Council. The organization meets Monday at 7 30 p m in Leesburg City Hall with W H Reedy presiding and Florida Highway Patrol representatives present.

City council race shapes up as incumbents face uncertain returns

As city elections near on December 14 observers note that one council member may not run again while two others are doubtful. Oscar Schubert appears sure to seek a second term, with Dr. Robert F. Wason and Warren Morgan leaning against reelection. Tom Champion intends not to run, citing other duties, and Margaret Lafroos has filed to qualify. Mayor Willmott's bid is unclear though he has tentatively said yes. Other potential candidates from prior races include Gordon Conboy and Gordon Dake with several former contenders considered.

Sunday Matinees To Receive Trial At IceHouse Theatre

IceHouse Theatre in Mount Dora plans Sunday matinees during the 1965 66 season after a board vote. The move aims to accommodate senior citizens who cannot drive at night and those who attend church and dine out on Sundays. If the test proves popular, matinees may become permanent. Memberships exceed 700 with a goal of 1,000 and include a $7.50 pass for six plays.

Punt Pass Kick Awards Told in Eustis Contest

Eighty nine youngsters from the Golden Triangle area competed in the Punt Pass and Kick event at the Little League Field in Eustis. Winners ranged from 8 to 13 years old, with 8 to 10-year-olds earning Washington Redskins jackets and older winners receiving plaques. Prizes included footballs helmets and plaques. Ford Motor Co. Eustis Motors and the Eustis Optimist Club sponsored the contest chaired by Arch Laney of Mount Dora.
