Lions Club to Hold Crucial Meeting Monday Night

Treasury cuts penny production to salvage copper for war

The treasury announces a 50 percent cut in penny output to about 60 million monthly and urges the public to stop saving pennies in piggy banks. Mint Director Nellie Tahloe Ross says if each family digs up 10 pennies and puts them back into circulation, 1,000 tons of copper could be freed for war industries.

Clarence Cook Gravlee Jr and Harry Thomas Barber have enlisted in the Marines. Lieutenant Douglas Crane of Mount Kisco New York has been called to service and is stationed in Brooklyn. Corporal Milton Chapman spent a weekend with his parents in Mount Dora and was promoted last month. LaMar Conant of Sorrento is at Fort Benning for parachute training and expects assignment soon. Brugs Kennedy joined the U S Marine Reserves and will remain at Stetson University DeLand as a sophomore until called. LaMar Silver is now a cadet at Ryan Field Apopka and will receive air corps uniform issue soon. Mrs Claud Chapman received a letter from son Ralph from the South West Pacific saying they were moved but not where. Service Men Club Dance Draws Sailors At Mount Dora

Young men of the A group enjoyed a Saturday night dance at the Service Club with Battery C attendees due to the Rollins Washington and Lee game in Orlando to aid army navy relief. Battery C beat Battery B at touch football earlier, and coming events include a 3 PM Friday touch game, a Saturday band concert, and a Sunday church service. The Mount Dora Yacht Club hosts the club with daily open hours and amenities for servicemen.

Lake District Scouters Meet in Mount Dora Saturday

Local Lake District Scouters met at 7 PM in Mount Dora with Scout Executive Harold Pace of Orlando in charge. George E Chronic, National Director of Senior Scouting, spoke on using older boys in Sea, Explorers and Air Scouting and noted current service calls.
