Mount Dora community glue funds for the Service Men's Committee to operate a year long program for armed forces personnel locally and those moved in. The drive, under Gerald B. Hurlburt, lists numerous individual and organizational donors, signaling broad local support and concern for contingency funding.
The Red Cross Defense Room calls for volunteers with morning, afternoon, and evening shifts, inviting registrations at the Red Cross Defense Room. Mrs Helen Dorne is thanked for organizing surgical dressings and keeping areas sanitary. A damaged flag from Battery C storm damage was repaired by Mrs Mac Fenton in memory of her brother Raymond Orton, who died in World War I.
The Fernleigh squad led by John Gowans won the open tournament at Colt’s Park and Elizabeth Park, taking the $16 prize. Ray Baker Willard Bryant and Carl Jainsen joined wins as Gowans four dominated early rounds, slipping only in a tight third. Bill Bryant excels elsewhere, and Mount Dora waits.
The Mount Dora Needlework Guild reports it observed Needlework Guild Week last February and plans further outreach after the New Year. Members are urged to contribute new garments and inform their director early while the Shoe Fund for school children accepts additions through Mrs. May Fenton.
H. M. Spooner returned from a pleasant summer in Michigan and visiting friends when the Royal Palm train carried him toward home. He awoke in Atlanta to discover a large sum of money had been taken from his possession, leaving only a dollar for travel onward.
Lions Club leaders Cecil Bowie Paul Turrentine and Gene Downs invite all members to attend a historic meeting at the Community Building Monday at 7 30 PM with a note that Lions in city and in service will be named next week. The club compares its status to the Lake Orange Baseball League as many members serve in defense work and Mount Dora is fully represented by its members and even the umpire Coach Vincent.
Mount Dora Hi Points urges immediate collection of iron steel brass bronze rubber copper aluminum zinc lead and rags for government needs. Rubber and tires are especially desired. Turn in scrap at school if possible to aid the nation and the PTA milk project.
Mount Dora Post American Legion plans an Armistice Day celebration with remarks by Col. French of the Coast Guard Signal Service. The program details will be announced later.
Last Sunday Chaplain Escue of the 351st S. L. Battalion at Winter Garden conducted services with Company C of the 350th Base and distributed New Testaments to officers and men, each bearing the recipient’s name.
The treasury announces a 50 percent cut in penny output to about 60 million monthly and urges the public to stop saving pennies in piggy banks. Mint Director Nellie Tahloe Ross says if each family digs up 10 pennies and puts them back into circulation, 1,000 tons of copper could be freed for war industries.
Patrolman for Lake L. R. Marchinton of DeLand has been assigned to Lake County by the Florida Highway Patrol with headquarters at Eustis. Marchinton James T. Prater enlisted in the ramp and is now stationed at Keesler Field Mississippi.
Brugs Kennedy pledged to Sigma Nu at Stetson University DeLand marking the close of the first rush period. Kennedy a sophomore at Stetson is the son of Mr and Mrs W V Kennedy and was baptized William.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bedenbaugh and their baby arrive in Mount Dora from Keiser Arkansas to occupy a home on Eighth Avenue. Mr. Bedenbaugh serves as superintendent of a farm in the Wood district.
Clarence Cook Gravlee Jr and Harry Thomas Barber have enlisted in the Marines. Lieutenant Douglas Crane of Mount Kisco New York has been called to service and is stationed in Brooklyn. Corporal Milton Chapman spent a weekend with his parents in Mount Dora and was promoted last month. LaMar Conant of Sorrento is at Fort Benning for parachute training and expects assignment soon. Brugs Kennedy joined the U S Marine Reserves and will remain at Stetson University DeLand as a sophomore until called. LaMar Silver is now a cadet at Ryan Field Apopka and will receive air corps uniform issue soon. Mrs Claud Chapman received a letter from son Ralph from the South West Pacific saying they were moved but not where. James C Hunter of Tavares, son of State's Attorney J W Hunter, will leave to report for duty in Miami as yeoman third class. Pickens Talley arrived from Ellington Field Texas to visit family and will be transferred soon. Jerald E Drawdy has returned from Navy Hospital Brooklyn to work at Mount Dora Pharmacy, glad to be home after Navy service ended.
Lieutenant David P. Coffin Jr and Miss Deanna Niedling married September 16 in Lincoln Neb. After a three day Rockies honeymoon the couple planned to reside in Denver where Coffin is stationed at Buckley Field as a nation.
A September 10 letter from Arnold Widmer in South Africa praises life there and asks his mother to say hello to friends while noting his Army address in Florida. The article recalls Capt Richard Ezzard and a major raid near Rabaul, with details of aircraft losses, and includes Roy Beasley’s Sept 11 letter describing better conditions, sleep, chow, and longing to return home.

War Savings Stamp prize won by Tom Brotherson. Herbert S Sawyer of Miami elected Governor of the Florida Kiwanis District at Jacksonville Silver Anniversary Convention, succeeding Fount H Rion. M F Bunnell elected Lieutenant Governor Central Division.
Young men of the A group enjoyed a Saturday night dance at the Service Club with Battery C attendees due to the Rollins Washington and Lee game in Orlando to aid army navy relief. Battery C beat Battery B at touch football earlier, and coming events include a 3 PM Friday touch game, a Saturday band concert, and a Sunday church service. The Mount Dora Yacht Club hosts the club with daily open hours and amenities for servicemen.
Cadet Bob Burkart of the Citadel second class has been promoted to sergeant in orders issued by Colonel C M McMurray. Son of Frank Burkart of Sylvan Shores Mount Dora, his promotion follows Citadel cadet regiment criteria for leadership qualities.
The Post Office Department urges sending Christmas packages to men overseas before November 1. If not sent yet, do it now. Visit the post office to learn rules on size weight and contents and discover items not allowed before packing parcels.

The Band Boosters Club of Mount Dora presents the first winter season concert at the Community Building with the School Glee Club. Admission is free with an offering taken. refreshments will be sold after. Highlights include new band uniforms, various marches, solos, glee club songs, and tributes such as Remember Pearl Harbor and Stars and Stripes Forever.
A Coast Guard Auxiliary unit was organized in this vicinity at a meeting held October 9 at the Mount Dora Yacht Club. Officers elected: Commander Harry E. Backes. Vice Commander O. M. Simpson. Junior Commander Roland J. Morse. Committees placed: Membership C Ferran O M Simpson R J Morse. Inspection H J Wise R J Morse. Cruise and Entertainment John Miller R J Morse P C Milner. Publicity Carl Ferran. Members present included Backus Simpson Ferran Miller Crane Morse Milner. Additional applications are under consideration with expectation of a full flotilla soon operating in local navigable waters.
Local Lake District Scouters met at 7 PM in Mount Dora with Scout Executive Harold Pace of Orlando in charge. George E Chronic, National Director of Senior Scouting, spoke on using older boys in Sea, Explorers and Air Scouting and noted current service calls. Ivan Bowers of Leesburg led the council meeting, with plans for the October Court of Honor in Tavares October 12, while Bill Barker organized the supper at Grand View Hotel and praise for the event.
Douglas Roseborough of 736 Clayton street, a junior at Maryville College, ranks fourth on the summer session honor roll with an average of 8.5. Dean F. D. McClelland announces the honor.
