Civilian Defense Workers See Army Signal Corps Films

Local civilian defense workers gathered at the Community Building to view Army Signal Corps films on gas mask use and care. Speakers, including Sergeant Beeson and Corporal Vetris, demonstrated masks while officials reported on Mount Dora’s defense setup and trained volunteers, praising the effort and noting a high level of readiness across branches.

Lions Club Meeting Clears the Evening Schedule

Lions Club meeting at the home of Lion Downs on Liberty street concluded with a large supper. Most members are Air Spotters or Air Wardens and postponed business to attend a Defense Council film at 8 o clock in the Community Building. Dora-Plymouth Road Approved by State Road Board

The State Road Department board in Orlando approved the Dora-Plymouth highway project estimated at 750000. Highway Engineer J H Dowling said bids would be advertised soon with grading likely to start by November 1 and paid by January 1. The board also ratified a fast start on the Overseas Highway from the Florida mainland to Key West, valued at 3480000.

Snow four inches reported from Wisconsin photos

Mrs Frank Hadlock received snapshots from her mother Mrs Koebke showing four inches of snow on the ground and trees at their Wisconsin summer home. The snow fell for four days before potato digging was complete. Some dug and stored potatoes were frozen while un dug spuds seemed unharmed. Mrs Koebke plans to return to Mount Dora next week.

Mr. Herman Cox and Mrs. Cox with children Kenneth and Carolyn moved to Mount Dora from Astatula. He works with Golden Triangle Laundry and Dry Cleaners driving a company truck. The family resides on Eleventh Avenue east of Clayton Street and plans civic and religious involvement.

Scrap Drives Help Win the War

Citizens urged to save scrap as mills need materials to forge weapons. One old bucket yields steel for three bayonets, a car battery supplies lead for anti air guns and 75mm howitzers, and 29 tank guns. Copper kettles, shovels and other metals support ammunition and grenades. Report readiness to City Hall for pickup Saturday morning.

Community Church Services Resume with Dr James Richards

The Congregational church resumes services this Sunday with pastor Dr James Austin Richards in the pulpit to preach The Clean sing of Prayer. J Edwin Baker Elected Senator From Lake County

J Edwin Baker of Umatilla won the Democratic nomination for State Senator from Lake County by a 1490 vote majority over T G Futch of Leesburg based on unofficial returns. Baker received 2731 votes to Dutch 1241 for the unexpired term of Major Thos H Cooley of Mount Dora who resigned due to Army leave. Baker, a Florida native, moved to Lake County in 1934 to head the Harry Anna Crippled Children's Home in Umatilla and has Ai Kiwanis leadership and local defense work roles. In Mount Dora 248 ballots were cast with Baker at 225, Dutch 20, and 3 ballots spoiled.

Red Cross Defense Room Notes Opens October 5 in Mount Dora

The Red Cross room on Fifth Avenue will host surgical dressings sessions starting October 5 with Mrs E H Holliger appointed senior supervisor for Mount Dora Unit 2. Assistants include Mrs Overhiser and a team of supervisors and cutters. Hours are 9 to 12 and 2 to 4 30, plus evenings 7 to 9 on Tuesday and Thursday. Mount Dora’s quota is 2500 dressings and local volunteers are urged to participate.
