Christmas Seals and Bonds go on sale to support tuberculosis prevention. The fundraising drive promotes health programs and asks the public to purchase seals and bonds through local offices and participating merchants.
The Lake County Tuberculosis and Health Association urges use of Christmas Seal Bonds sold by White and Tremain to fund health education X rays and nutrition classes. Seals are available at the post office and local shops with proceeds staying largely in Lake County.
The Princess Theatre announces a Thanksgiving matinee on Thursday the 22nd at 3:15 pm with doors opening at 3:00 pm. December bookings include Gary Cooper in Along Came Jones Gene Tierney in A Bell for Adane Peggy Ann Garfalle in Junior Miss Fall Angel Alice Faye in Fallen el and more titles featuring stars such as Barry Fitzgerald John Garrie William Eythe Lloyd Nolan Jeanne Crain Dick Haymes Alexander Know Charles Coburn Betty Grable June Haver and others.
Congressman Joe Hendricks spent two hours in Mount Dora last Friday discussing an $85,000 post office building and how 14 towns in his district are eligible for new federal facilities totaling about $1.6 million. Four Lake County towns including Mount Dora, Eustis, Tavares and Clermont may receive buildings within three years, depending on inter department decisions based on need. He pledged to advocate for Mount Dora but cautioned he cannot promise funding.
William Jay Barker, Red Cross Field Director, returned from Berlin District with a large scale German ordnance map of a Scottish area. The map shows topography and routes with a western Germany road map on the reverse side. Red Cross used these maps for workers and preserved scarce paper by reusing them for future distributions.
This Sunday morning the Mount Baptist Church will hold monthly winter services with congregational singing and a program including negro spirituals performed by Mr Swayne bass soloist and professional concert singer. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
The Woman's Association held its first missionary meeting Friday at Miss Madeline Milner’s home. Mrs. George H. Peabody presided, Milner led devotions and outlined the year’s work, followed by a friendly social hour.
The First Methodist Church will host Rev. George Gibson for morning sermons on Sunday at eleven o'clock and evening worship at 7 30 with the topic The Message of the Book of Jonah. Services feature choir music led by Darrell Pendleton and Mrs C M Brown at the piano.
Arthur L. Butler evangelist will discuss The Future of the Faith Thursday at 7 30 PM and Delecnanians will present The Sabbath and the Lord's Day Sunday at 7 PM at the Church of Christ on Fifth Avenue opposite the public school. Sunday School starts at 10 AM and preaching follows. Public invited.
New arrivals include 1st Lt. and Mrs. Simmey F. Bland and their infant daughter Sarah Finley Pratt of Adel Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. D Webster from Canada Lake New York join Adel residents Mrs A E Hopkine origin and Elizabeth Powers formerly of MokCoy Ohio, now living on Tremain Street.
The Lions together with Kiwanis and the I Len Legion will hold Friday at 6 30 pm at the Community Building a dinner honoring three pen pals of Japanese origin from the fall of Chetegiice to the end of the war Charles Norris Ed Sadler and Roy Cookinham Dr Lindsay McNair pastor emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church of Tieteans will speak The Lions meet again next Monday at the Grand View Hotel for an important session.

Recent visitors from multiple states and provinces stayed two days at the Grand View Hotel. They fished the nearby lakes and boasted a 64 pound bass among twenty two fish caught. Notable guests included J Ray Keiser D W James M H Evans and many others.
Lt and Mrs Henry Page of Baltimore return this week after a three week visit with Col and Mrs Henry Page of Mount Dora. Lt Page just came from the Pacific after Okinawa and other campaigns and expects Army release soon. They were impressed by Mount Dora and were especially fond of the swimming.
Pvt Willard J G Russell has been honorably discharged after enlisting March 24 1941 at Orlando Army Air Base. He served at Greenville Buckley Field Pueblo Dalhart Pratt Grand Island receiving World War II Victory American Defense and American Theatre medals. He is married with one son and was a student before service.
Howell Reed now at the USN Separation Center in Memphis Tennessee. Cpl James Snell returned to New York aboard the Hawaiian Trader. Sgt Roy Christopher arrived in Los Angeles and may be discharged at Camp Blanding after Air Force intelligence service overseas. Sgt Robert Quixley spending ten day furlough with parents in Mount Dora before returning to Ft Oglethorpe. Louie Melton Branch honorable discharge after three years service and award of good conduct and World War II Victory Medal. Lawrence Owens discharged after three years five months, served overseas in Northern France, awarded medals. Capt R B Strawn stationed on Luzon with the Signal Corps training school. Major Robert Tincher recommended for Legion of Merit for meritorious conduct as intelligence officer and for processing prisoners of war and war-time reports. His group captured 39,000 prisoners of war.
The Morse family sees three sons released from military duty. Capt Chester W Morse, once a German prisoner, plans a visit to Macon Missouri with his wife and baby. Specialist John H Morse has been discharged and stays in Brockton Massachusetts. Harry Morse, a V-12 program student, completed an accelerated medical course and will pursue further studies.
Kiwanis and Lions clubs with the American Legion host a 6:30 Friday dinner at the Community to honor three Mount Dora boys recently released from Japanese captivity. The Orlando Thanksgiving speaker will lead the event. New member Kenneth Maglathlin joined last week amid other attendees.
Kiwanis members are invited by Rev. Jimmy Sutley to attend Sunday service at Mount Dora Baptist Church on November 25 at 11 00 a m. A special section will be reserved for the club. This annual event is a familiar tradition for members.
John A. Heist of Lake Jem was elected commodore at a Mount Dora Yacht Club meeting held last Thursday night in the club house. The house committee proposed building repairs and improvements to be carried out when possible. An entertainment committee will be appointed next meeting and season social activities will begin in January. Refreshments were served with Carl Graves hosting.
The Florida Public Welfare Boards administer aid for needy individuals and set grant limits. District No. 11 in Leesburg serves the local area. A reader asks about increasing Old Age Assistance for a granddaughter and receiving two federal checks. officials respond that increases are not possible for that need, and suggest applying for Aid to Dependent Children. All town council members attend a special Nov 20 meeting except Parker. Nominees certified for two year posts include J. E. Fortner for mayor and J. B. Griswold for Clerk Tax Collector and Treasurer. Council candidates are Mrs. Mabel M. Cleary C Rollin Javens Alfred W. Rehbaum Jr. J. M. Turner. Park Commission nominee Carl S. Gra.
Mount Dora will honor three former Japanese POWs Cpl Edward O Sadler S Sgt Charles H Norris and S Sgt LeRoy N Cookinham at a joint Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Mount Dora Post American Legion Mount Dora Kiwanis and Mount Dora Lions Clu s Friday at 6 30 pm Dr Lindsay McNair will speak, toastmaster George J White to introduce honored guests and gifts will be presented.
The junior class presents Cash and Carrie on Friday December 14 at the Community Building. Doris Harding plays Carrie mothering her brood while Darrell Pendleton as Uncle Omar tests her budget. Lucille Minkley portrays Jennie Wharton and Laura Roseborough plays Anne Ferguson in a tale of roomers, love and comic misadventure.
C E Abbott and a fishing companion reported 14 bass caught Monday morning near the limit. Abbott said the catch was nothing to brag about as none were large, the biggest about 3 pounds.
The annual community Thanksgiving service will be held at 11 o clock Thursday morning in the Mount Dora Baptist church. Pastor Gibson of the Methodist church will deliver the sermon with participation by Pastor Richards of the Community church and Pastor Sutley of the Baptist church. Choir members from all three churches are urged to attend and join in the musical program.
The Chamber of Commerce board met to plan winter events and discuss advertising amid lodging shortages. They considered replacing the Mount Dora road sign at Barberville and addressing water hyacinths choking the Apopka Canal. Jack Simpson and Paul Milner were named to study canal clearing and fence repairs. Carl Graves to represent the Chamber on the winter program. A Friday meeting will review committee reports.
The Youth Center hosts a pot luck supper at Hurricane Hut on Friday November 23 at 6 30 p m to honor all students who participated in football at the Mount Dora school this year.
The Mount Dora Art League schedules a meeting for Wednesday at 2:30 PM at Men A. P. Bigelow home 644 Alexander Street.
