Thanksgiving Day Community Service in Mount Dora

Mount Dora prepares a morning Thanksgiving service at 10 o clock in Donnelly Park with the United Choirs and Mount Dora Orchestra. If weather fails, the service moves to the Methodist church with Rev Bouterse delivering the sermon and Ferris directing the music. An offering benefits Kings Daughters and the program includes hymn singing and an anthem.

Mrs. Akam of Mayville New York, longtime winter resident, arrives Monday and will be welcomed by Mount Dora friends. She hosts a gathering on Thanksgiving Day. About thirty reservations have been made for the Thanksgiving Day dinner served from 12 30 to 2 30, offering guests a simpler alternative to home preparation.

Mount Dora Orchestra Plans Sunday Park Concert

The Mount Dora Municipal Orchestra opens its season with a Sunday afternoon concert at Donnelly Park. Led by W. J. Gorman, with L. W. Smith as president and R. C. Williamson as secretary, the group features soloist Miss Louise Lane and members including Harriet Banks and Ivan Parker. If rain, the performance moves to the Community Auditorium.

The Home Demonstration club of Mount Dora will meet in the Community building Wednesday afternoon, November 26, instead of November 19. Mrs. Willen will demonstrate making fruit cake and remodeling old clothes with practical suggestions to follow.

Fair Response To Red Cross Appeal

Mount Dora's Red Cross drive enrolled 178 members at downtown stands last Saturday with additional small donations. The branch, moving away from house to house canvassing, aims to reach 200 members to fund relief efforts, with Miss Lewis and Mrs. Keller handling receipts and memberships. Stands were at the post office, two pharmacies, near First National Bank, and Sidel’s Market busy corner, staffed by a roster of local volunteers.

Rollins Trio to Entertain at Mount Dora Woman's Club

The Rollins College Trio cello violin and piano will perform at the Woman's club meeting next Tuesday at 3 in the Community Building. All women in and near Mount Dora are invited. The club's weekly sewings aid garments for the Jacksonville Children's Home, using sewing machines in the Community church parlors provided by the Aid Society.

The Community Hall social rooms are open every Friday afternoon for townspeople and winter visitors. Card tables, piano, and victrola are available for use, inviting all to enjoy a pleasant social time.

First Thanksgiving Proclamation 1789 Found in Library of Congress

The 1789 resolution urged a national day of Thanksgiving and prayer to recognize God’s favors and the new Constitution. Mr or Mrs Philip Bachert hosted the sixth community card party in the Community Building social room last Friday. Fourteen tables played and prizes of decks of cards were awarded. Mrs Bachert donated a silver punch ladle for the room. Admission funds furnishings and equipment for the social rooms.

Help for Colored Orphans at Belleview Home

Mamie Lee Gilbert solicitor for Mount Dora and Rebecca Williams visited the Belleview Orphan's Home for colored children and delivered food and clothing donations. They reported forty children, only one sickness, and urged further contributions to support the home and its school.

Professor D D Roseborough and Miss A W Hubbell are official delegates to the F E A Convention in Orlando November 27 29 with Miss Nana Taylor as alternate. Opening session Thanksgiving night at the Municipal Auditorium will feature Will Durant. Public session and local teachers attendance noted.
