Federal quarantine against the Mediterranean fruit fly is lifted effective November 15, ending restrictions on interstate Florida product movement. Orlando eradication head P. A. Hordale announced the action after intensive inspections and strong compliance by fruit growers. continued inspections will guard against future infestations.
Mount Dora Public School announces a season of student plays. The elementary grades perform on November 21, the junior class on January 15, and the primary department in March. The senior play will close the series with a traditional climactic show. Inter scholastic debates occur in February with Mount Dora High entering the Dramatic Tournament to perform one act plays including The Ghost Story.
Grant Cowles, acting as Tax Assessor for 1930, billed $225 for services including $25 paid to Mrs. Johnson, effectively earning $200. City officials thanked him for the economy gesture and promptly paid the amount, noting the omission of the item in Tuesday night council discussions.
The Biblical drama Peter the Rock presented by Leesburg B Y P A youths under Miss Frances Rammage will be repeated at the Taepagee Methodist church by request. The cast delivers a humane interpretation of Peter and Christian narrative. admission is free with a free will offering.
Kiwanis members gathered at Villa Dora with twenty one present as Carl Garves guided a busy program. Nineteen of thirty three members had registered for the On to Miami event and a push for full participation was urged ahead of Kiwanis International in Miami next June. A nominating committee was named for November 20 elections. Visitors included Corser and Cartwright of Florida Public Service Co. while Cartwright spoke on public utilities growth and service in Florida and nationwide.
Mount Dora High and Elementary schools prepare for district and state contests at DeLand and University of Florida. Coaches Miss A W Hubbell and Miss Nan Taylor lead efforts for Mount Dora High with plans for January local events, February district, and March state finals. Mount Dora Elementary enters Florida Spelling Bee with champion speller advancing to DeLand to face peers from the region.
Mrs. R N White of the Park Commission announces a benefit bridge party to fund cemetery beautification on Thursday evening November 20 at the Community House at eight. She will finance labor and fertilizer for the old cemetery and begin a palm row and shrubbery in the new addition. Assisting are Mrs. A W Birkbeck and Miss Rosalie Brantley Harriet Banks and Emma Leavenworth. Tables are one dollar.
Mayor Lackey selects J. G. Kirby as recreation director to launch night activities at Donnelly Park. Tentative schedule assigns men’s volleyball Tuesday, tennis Wednesday, women’s volleyball Thursday, and basketball Friday. Monday and Saturday open for practice. Maurice Tu to coach basketball, Grady Simpson volleyball, Ed Stokes tennis. program starts early next week.
The Palmetto Woman's Club celebrates the formal opening of its new building. In Lake Worth officials announce winter season improvements to the golf links including course refinements and added facilities.
At a Monday night meeting of Mount Dora business men a Progressive City Ticket was endorsed for the upcoming election. Nominees include Mayor Thomas H. Cooley and councilmen James Simpson A J Waltz and A P Sidel with Wm J Johnson as Clerk and Treasurer and Mrs Ethelyn P Zell as Park Commissioner. If elected Johnson and Zell would seek re election. Petitions for nomination will be filed with the city clerk per law to place their names on the official ballot.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis host a luncheon today at the Community building at 12 15 p m with expected attendance over a hundred. A musical program features Miss Margaret Noble Rev Mathew J Bouterse Mrs Bouterse and Mrs C M Brown. Tickets are limited and available at the Chamber office on Fifth Avenue or at the door before 12 15 p m.
Senior B Y P U members host a study course with Rev Bouterse teaching Baptist beliefs. A fine class of students will take the final.
Public reception for Opie Read, dean of American authors, is set for Saturday at Howey-in-the-Hills on the Floridan hotel lawns. The event features a News Boys Band concert, exhibit of a wonder dog, an introduction by W J Howey, and a talk by Read with handshakes afterward. A 12:30 luncheon precedes the reception with John M Stahl among attendees.
Special Armistice Day services at the Methodist church gathered the American Legion American Legion Auxiliary Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Music by the vested choir under Mrs Truskett and a quartet named Lane Elder Sapp and Farris accompanied the event. Rev J H Elder spoke on Peace in an able manner.
Leesburg, Howey and Eustis hosted the South Florida Press Association and the PaRAGraphers League last weekend. Despite poor weather, attendance was unusually large and enthusiastic. The Magnolia hotel in Leesburg served as headquarters with Friday sessions and a Press Breakfast on Saturday. The Leesburg Chamber of Commerce hosted the Breakfast, Gilbert Leach acted as toastmaster, and Howey-in-the-Hills provided a bus trip to the Hotel Floridan for a tour of local citrus developments. Ivy Clough Johnson presided as toastmistress at a banquet remembered as a major event.
Mount Dora announces a December 12 celebration featuring Southern melodies by an orchestra a one act plantation drama Lilah presented with special permission of Walter H Baker Co songs in old time Southern costumes and a Pageant of the Queens with fifty performers The event ends with a reception in the auditorium and social room inviting Northern winter visitors and friends from outside the area.
The Intermediate A pupils present The Frog Fairy at the school auditorium on Friday evening November 21. Eight actors perform the fairy tale with royal costumes while eight features follow, including music, clowns, a humorous reading, impersonations, and athletic stunts. Proceeds support the school library.
Mrs. M. J. Bouterse acted as hostess for the boys of the Intermediate Sunday school class Monday night. A chop suey supper was served and enjoyed by all. Bouterse Jr. is class president with Mos teller as treasurer Moorhead as vice president Silver as social service chair Moon and Pooser on membership committee.
Mount Dora hosts the annual Red Cross roll call this Saturday amid strong appeals for funds. Local committees will be set up at Sidle's Market and the A and P, with extra stations at the Post Office, drug stores, and bank corner. Memberships range from 1.00 to 25.00, with most funds split between national and local work.
The Mount Dora Municipal Orchestra opens its season with a Sunday concert at Annie Donnelly Park on November 23 at 3 p m In case of bad weather the show moves to the Community auditorium The event aims to benefit Mount Dora residents and visitors as part of ten to fifteen winter concerts inviting all to attend.
