Mount Dora and Eustis clash this week as locals anticipate a turning point after years of hope for better results. Fans recall 1964 hopes and now expect a pivotal game that could end the drought for Mount Dora.
City Councilman Fred Compton announces resignation effective January 1 to allow the mayor to appoint a successor for the remainder of the term. He cites moving out of town, criticism over his continued seat, and hopes for “new blood” with fresh ideas on the council.
Mount Dora faces Eustis Friday night in the season finale with a share of the Mid-Lakes Conference at stake. A Mount Dora win would create a three way tie for first with Eustis and Clermont while an Eustis victory would claim the district title and a state playoff berth. The Hurricanes seek to counter Eustis’s strong passing attack that has felled eight opponents this fall.
Nine candidates qualified for five city offices to be voted next month. Three seek Council seats: Gordon Dake Howard Cox Jane Kramer C O Lott Brandon Wald and Tommy Houser. Park Board has three candidates G O French Walter Weiderhold W O Hinz. Election December 8 with ballots printed. voting on machines at Mount Dora Community Building.
City Councilman Howard Cox cites Youth Advisory Board and Hurricane Hut management, plus utility system upgrades, as his term achievements. He says funding limits constrain projects and that city governance should run like a business. Continued on Page 4.
Brandon Wald, a ten year Mount Dora resident, aims for a City Council seat with a platform to keep Mount Dora a good place to live. He promotes residential growth and cautions against locating industry in town, urging focus on recreation and preserving Lake Dora amidst pollution concerns. He cites state controls and calls for council pressure on agencies to act.
