May 20 1971 report notes Mount Dora High School will hold its annual prom and within days seniors will marry into adulthood as the town gains more than 100 new voters and full fledged citizens after the Community Building ceremony.
Mayor Jesse Willmott signed a proclamation designating May as Poppy Month and May 29 as Poppy Day in Mount Dora. Doris McKenna, Denise Roberts, and Alison Patrick of the American Legion Auxiliary and Mount Dora Rainbow Girls presented the first poppy. Ruth Williams, Poppy Day chair, urges residents to wear the memorial flower on Memorial Day.
Mount Dora City Council reviewed two condo projects on Lake Dora north shore. A height issue near the Yacht Club prompted discussion on city right of way to allow lower plans. A second 27 unit complex at Wise’s Boat Works was also discussed along with a golf club sprinkler loan proposal.
Preschool roundup for Mount Dora area students will be held May 27 from 9 to 12 and 1 to 3 in the Roseborough Elementary School office building. Parents with last names A-M should attend morning. N-Z in afternoon. Children must be 5 by January 1, 1972 and bring birth certificates, immunization records, and proof of age if needed.
The Golden Triangle Craftsmen Club will hold its final meeting of the season at 12 noon Thursday May 20 at the Eustis Community Center. Dr. Norman Himes will call the meeting to order. Master Masons from the Golden Triangle area are invited. John M. Kennedy of Golden Gem Growers will speak on Citrus Production in Florida. Luncheon reservations to George Arnold at 383 3120.
Kathy McWhorter a Mount Dora High School senior received Berry College Second Honor Graduate Scholarship worth 900 dollars annually. The award supports valedictorian and salutatorian students in participating schools and requires maintaining a B average.
