Mount Dora showcased a major downtown Greek night with streets blocked for revelers and dancing in the streets, drawing large crowds and creating a festive atmosphere last week.
The IceHouse awards party at Hartridge Hall Mount Dora on May 28 features a social hour, roast beef dinner, and Fr. John Mangrum speech. A benefit auction offers nearly $1000 in new items, with door prizes and Ice Cubes awards for season talent. Tickets are $5, with reservations urged by May 20.
The annual Mount Dora band concert occurs May 20 at 8 p.m. in the Community Building. The new 50 member middle school band performs nine numbers including Mexican dance and American folk tunes. The high school band follows with a 45 minute program featuring Mancini medley, modern pop rock, Sousa marches, and a Brontosaurus march. Tickets at the door: adults $1, students 50 cents, preschool free. Proceeds fund new uniforms for an expanded band next fall. Band boosters admitted free with membership cards.
Boy Scout Troop 129 of Tangerine holds a car wash on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tangerine Community Building to raise funds for camping tents.
The Mount Dora Topic earned first place in the Best Column category at the Florida Press Association Awards Luncheon in Winter Haven. Author Jim Waldron wrote the winning column Two for the Road, with the paper the sole Lake County winner among 260 plus entries.
A tea party honoring Mrs Edward Cross of Mrs Cross s Nursery School will be held Saturday afternoon from three to five at First United Methodist Church Mount Dora. Mrs Cross retires this week after many years of loving service to children and runs her school on Lakeshore Drive since 1952. Parents and friends are invited.
