Mayor I. M. V. Simpson declares Saturday May 28 Poppy Day in Mount Dora to honor fallen service members and aid disabled veterans and dependents through wearing the Memorial Poppy supported by the American Legion and Auxiliary.
The Florida State Fish and Game Commission announces the fishing season opens officially at 12:01 a.m. Saturday May 21. Residents may fish in their home county without a license but must pay 2.50 to fish beyond county lines. A state license costs 1.75 for a single day, 5.00 for a full year. One month per year is closed to freshwater fishing. Daily bag limits apply to ten species with specific quotas and a 40 fish limit for a mixed string.
Mr. Roland B Morse of Brockton Massachusetts buys a home at Fifth Avenue and Grandview Street and plans September move to Mount Dora with wife and daughter who will attend Rollins College Winter Park. Purchase handled by J J West Realty. They plan to join town life and enjoy waterway boating with a Wise Boat Works project.
Dr Spencer, longtime pastor of the Congregational church, will fill the pulpit at 11 o'clock Sunday morning as Dr Brodie leaves earlier this week for Michigan.
Ta Va res attorney J W Hunter lost his automobile and the garage housing it in a fire about 4 o clock Tuesday morning. The estimated loss is about 1500 dollars with partial insurance. Origin of the blaze is not known.
The Masonic District School of Instruction will convene in Tavares for three days from June 14 to 16. Allen H. White of St. Petersburg will lead the program with eight Lake and Sumter lodges represented. Tavares Lodge Master Clifford Hiatt hosts and Wylie W. Gillispie aided securing the event, with next district meeting to be scheduled.
St. Landry Parish Louisiana leads the country in producing sweet potatoes according to Census Bureau reports. Bias SPOR is noted in the findings.
Norman H. Davis urges gifts to aid millions in China as refugees flood villages and cities. American Red Cross has allocated funds and seeks 1 million dollars quickly to provide food clothing and shelter while distribution is overseen by officials in Washington and a local collector in Mount Dora.
Cub Scouts hold a food sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 418 Donnelly Avenue next to the Topic office. Funds aim to register with the council and affiliate with the national organization. A variety of home cooked foods will be available and the public is urged to attend.
A pre school clinic for children entering school in September will be held in the High School auditorium on Saturday May 21 from 2 to 5 o clock. Parents of first year entrants are urged to bring their child to obtain needed information and have records filed. This clinic is sponsored by the P T A.
Rev Ralph W Acree of Plant City will preach at the Baptist church on Sunday in both morning and evening services. The evening service starts at 8 o'clock after the B P A meetings which will run at 7 o'clock instead of 6 30.
A 7:30 PM service at the Methodist church directed by Mrs. C. M. Gudgeon features hymns such as Praise Him Praise, Let the Lower Lights Be Burning, Love Lifted Me, Beulah Land, Tell Me the Old Old Story, and I Am Coming Home. Soloists include Mr. W. J. Ferris and Mrs. Brown, with organist Mrs. C. M. Gudgeon and pianist Mrs. C. M. Brown.
Veteran players Frank Hadlock and Dr. Rietz topped the Mount Dora field in the World Bridge Olympic. They were rated high for north south by the District Olympic Board with high marks for east west, as changes to the scoring system limit winners to one pair each session.
Town officials urge parents to curb reckless bicycle riding by children. Ordinance bans more than one rider per bike and requires lights after dark. Bicycles share traffic rules with vehicles and must keep right, obey signals, and show courtesy to cars and pedestrians. Parents are responsible for their children’s violations.
Forty Florida graduates will be installed in Phi Kappa Phi at the annual initiation banquet during commencement week. Nelson W. Morley of Mount Dora is among those pledged to join the national honorary society recognizing high scholastic achievement across all departments.
Dr. and Mrs. Andrew M. Brodie departed for Manistee Michigan to attend a state church conference in the town where he pastored for ten years. They will then visit their summer home at Onekama Michigan for a few weeks.
Mrs Elizabeth Evans and Miss Helen Lemert are detained in Miami Beach following an accident to Mrs Evans that caused a dislocated shoulder and a fractured bone. The exact cause remains unknown and they will likely not return to Mount Dora until the second week of June.
Kiwanis will meet on Fridays instead of Tuesdays or aT for now at Ave Villa Dora. The unanimous vote reflects 93 percent attendance over 12 months and gains approval from Mrs Evans who chairs the luncheons committee at the Community Building.
Mount Dora welcomes Capt. A. H. Brinkman the state board approved broker at eighty three, now practicing in the Fourth avenue office opposite the Post Office. formerly from Chicago, he holds captain papers for seagoing craft and has navigated inland waters extensively. after his wife's death he settled on Lake Dora’s lakeshore and moved to Mount Dora.
May 21 brings fish stories and ideas for a conservation bass contest. George H. Castes is celebrated as a top local angler after returning a big bass to the water to spare others, while thoughts turn to fair prizes and clearer lake-season rules.
Florida officials announce the first State of Orange Box Derby to be held February 22, 1939 at Mount Dora. Regional eliminations lead to a Mount Dora state final on Washington's Birthday, with entrants building a Pram sailboat costing no more than 27 dollars and following Waterways Congress rules.
Two Mount Dora members join the Florida state organization's official board after the bi biennial Tallahassee convention. Mrs. George Coffin becomes state treasurer and Mrs. Robert Fenton joins the executive committee. Delegates report back at the Mount Dora circle meeting hosted by Mrs. Fenton on Ninth Avenue next Monday.
The P T A bookshelf committee hosts a silver tea in the high school library next Monday afternoon May 23 from four to five thirty. Home Economics girls stage a style show in the auditorium and manual training projects are displayed in the library. Biology exhibits include rock gardens wood displays an aquarium and wild flower collections in the biology lab. Tea serves by Home Ec girls with proceeds for the P T A bookshelf. All P T A members and friends are invited.
The executive board of the P.T.A. will meet Monday at 2 45 p m at the home of Mrs George Coffin on Seventh avenue near Clayton street. This first official meeting of the new board is urged for full attendance of officers and committee members. The session will end in time for all to attend the P T A book's silver tea.
Florida children in the Children's Home Society seek families to host boys and girls ages six to sixteen for the summer. About 150 kids need vacation homes, with clothing supplied but transport costs borne by hosting families. City officials note the Florida Association of Osteopathic Physicians held a four day convention at Lakeside Inn Mount Dora, featuring five renowned instructors from Philadelphia College of Osteopathy.
Mr. H. J. Akehurst of Sydney Nova Scotia recently bought property on Sanford Road and unearthed an old rusted cannon ball while preparing ground for bulbs. The ball lies in the Topic window as he plans gladioli crops and a new home with Mrs. Akehurst in Mount Dora.
Mr J J West trusted want ads to recover his Waterman fountain pen lost weeks ago. The 25 cent notice brought back his favorite pen, a cherished keepsake personally signed by the late owner and famed for its smooth writing. He had doubted ads but now believes they are read and effective.
The Wise Owl Patrol of the Girl Scouts met Monday at Scout Little House. Nature notebooks began as members Martha Thomas Vernell Shipley Marilyn Smith Lucille Harding Faye Shipes Ann Groover and Allene Evans attended. Officers elected were Patrol Leader Lucille Harding Assistant Patrol Leader Ann Groover Secretary Treasurer Martha Thomas and Scribe Faye Shipes.
