Lake County Roads on Post War Schedule Urged

Senator J Edwin Baker urged early construction of State Roads 261 and 261 A noting they are vital links in the State Road System. The State Road Department adopted a resolution to begin work as soon as federal restrictions on materials manpower and equipment are lifted. The secretary certified the resolution as a true copy from the Tallahassee meeting.

Clayton Bagwell, staff sergeant, was home from Nevada, recalling Oregon earlier as a preferred posting. Lamar Conant writes that mail sometimes travels world routes. Gordon McDonald, Navy petty officer, left for Little Creek Virginia as an instructor after training in Jacksonville and Richmond. he looks forward to returning to Mount Dora with fellow servicemen after the Big Job.

Ed Crump Dies After Heartworm In Old Bird Dog Tale

A familiar village dog Ed Crump died Monday night from heartworm. The well known companion of George Malone, Crump was a friendly streetside figure who once hauled a fifty pound sack of dog feed from Mount Dora station to his home, a tale echoed in local memory.

Veteran Linotype Operator Visits at Florida Luncheon

Bentley Corley of Leesburg visits the Lakeside Inn for the First Florida Infantry Association luncheon during the U S W V encampment. He worked as a linotype operator for the Leesburg Commercial and at the Mergenthaler plant in Florida for twenty years before retirement. Corley now helps at the Commercial plant due to wartime shortages.

Kiwanis observes Music Week with a performance by Mount Dora High School Band under Manuel Sedano. Dr. Lindsay McNair of Orlando gave an emotional Mothers speech, praising maternal sacrifices and urging gratitude as war claims more lives. Spanish War Vets and Auxiliary Conclude Successful Convention

Transportation issues did not hinder a near hundred Scouts from six Lake County towns attending the Clermont Camporee under a new Central Florida Council plan assessing troops by standards for eight citations. The event featured campfire honors, district meetings, and plans for Camp Wewa with six districts hosting similar Camporees in May and June. The Spanish War Veterans closed their 33rd annual convention announcing officers Charles O. Foster and M. S. Cook, with William Stie ger remembered and thanks given to Mount Dora and Eustis camps. A tree dedication for retiring Commander Walter Patton marked Sunday activities, followed by memorial services and remarks from leaders in the veterans and auxiliary groups.
