Lions Club Meeting Highlights Charity Event and New Members

The Mount Dora Lions Club hosted Dr Samuel Ruegg of Tavares with a focus on sight preservation and civic causes. Proceeds from Funzapoppin and a baby contest funded eye care Girl Scouts and other community work. New members Reid and Downs were inducted and future programs announced.

Yacht Club Officers for 42743 Elected

The annual yacht club election was held at the Thursday business meeting. Officers elected include Commodore George D. Church Vice Commodore W M Kennedy Rear Commodore Alfred Rehbaum Jr Secretary Treasurer John A Murray. Committees named include Regatta House Membership and Entertainment with chairmen Alfred Rehbaum Sr and A E Bell respectively. The meeting followed the regular Thursday supper and drew a large attendance.

Fifty homeowners urged to file Homestead Exemption

Tax Assessor L. R. Tremain notes at least fifty homeowners missed this year’s Homestead Exemption filing. Applications must be filed by April 1 or the property is taxed at full value. Tremain has blanks at his office and at the city hall for convenient filing.

Major Cooley Home on Furlough

Major Thomas H. Cooley arrived unexpectedly last Friday for his first furlough since he was called to active duty as provost marshal at Camp Davis North Carolina six months ago. His duties keep him on the job twenty four hours a day but he is in fine shape and has gained weight. He left Wednesday to return to camp for special training in mechanized warfare as he is to go into active service in charge of a mechanized division.

Thurman Pierce of Lake Jem has been missing from the Honor Roll but is now listed. He has served three years in the armed forces and is currently in the Panama Canal Zone. Also noted are Toby Greene in Australia by cable, Cliff White stationed at Camp Blanding, and William McCown training in Douglas Georgia who made his first solo flight after eight hours eleven minutes of flying.

Band Boosters Club Meeting Tonight At School Auditorium

The Band Boosters Club holds a 7:30 pm meeting in the School Auditorium. Mrs. W A Vincent chairs the membership drive and invites nonmembers to join. Dues are 25 cents per person to fund new music for the band.

Castletown angler nets 15 lb 9 oz bass on St Johns River

Mrs. R.S. Bridge of Castleton on Hudson New York caught a 15 pound 9 ounce black bass in the St Johns River on March 7. It is reported as the largest bass in Lake County this season with a photo by Powers from the Lake County Chamber of Commerce.

Six New Members Join Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce

The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce reports six additional memberships for 1942 bringing total to 131. Maine publisher visits Topic in Mount Dora

Frank B. Nichols proprietor of the Bath Daily Times and two weekly papers visited the Topic on Tuesday. He and Mrs. Nichols stayed at Mount Plymouth Hotel with Mr. and Mrs. George Ca and attended Lawn Bowling Club closing matches. Nichols praised the Topic’s well equipped shop.

Winners announced in 1941 42 National Bass Tournament

The Leesburg Florida event closed March 13 with prizes awarded in multiple divisions. Notables include Mrs F C Towers and Mrs Viola Jenkins of Leesburg earning top and tied bass prizes, Fred Butler and Bill Folsom among winners in Men’s Tourist and Resident divisions, and W L Reynolds taking a 11 lb bass prize.

L J Drawdy Dies After Brief Illness In Mount Dora

L J Drawdy 52 a Mount Dora contractor and church member died Sunday after breakfast while playing with his granddaughter. Born in Seneca in 1890 he moved to Mount Dora with his family about 21 years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3pm at First Baptist Church with burial in Umatilla cemetery. He leaves a widow two daughters Lorraine Dixon and Elizabeth four sons L J Jr James Jerald and Julian and two brothers Arthur and Duncan.

Entertainers Delight Tourist Club with Varied Program

The Tourist Club in Community Hall enjoyed a Tuesday evening performance by Gladys Cornell Frederic Welsh Charles Piers and Edna Rankin piano. The twentieth annual meeting of the Florida Forest and Park Association will be held March 27 at the University of Florida Gainesville.
