Downtown Athens Plans for Pedestrian Mall and Civic Centres

Athens Georgia officials and University of Georgia stakeholders outline a renewal plan for downtown. Proposals include a Clayton Street pedestrian mall, three civic centers near City Hall Courthouse and the bus station site, plus parks plazas and a boulevard of varied districts. Final Regatta Meeting Set Before Lake Dora Race

The Regatta Committee holds its final meeting at 5 p.m. at the Mount Dora Yacht Club. The 12th annual regatta will be held Sunday April 4 on Lake Dora with over 100 boats expected. Commodores Bosworth and Wilson will officiate and the event features at least 15 classes and trophies awarded after racing.

Alonzo Rivera presented a benefit program of Mexican dances at IceHouse Theatre in Mount Dora last Wednesday. The Mexican dancer, of Indian origin, showcased pre Columbian and modern routines with beautiful costumes and professional lighting by John Christian. Bleeker Wilkerson assisted with the rebozo demonstration and was praised for charm and grace. proceeds go to purchase a new curtain for IceHouse.

Bucket Truck Arrives For City Utilities Use

A bucket truck approved by the City Council has been delivered and will be in service by Mount Dora Utilities Department next week. Utilities Supt. B. C. Thompson and Chairman Gordon Dake said it is being serviced locally and should be operational by Monday to maintain power lines. Total cost was about $16,000.

Lake Sumter Junior College Forms Sigma Society

Sharon Uhl of Mount Dora serves as parliamentarian for the new Sigma Society at Lake Sumter Junior College. The women’s service group was named this week with 25 members and strong academic averages to date. The organization was announced April 8 at the Lee Community Building.

Mount Dora Swimmers Open Season With Sebring Split

Mount Dora High School opened its 1965 season by splitting a dual meet with Sebring. The boys won 55-28 while the girls fell 48-35. Ed Brooks led the boys with two wins and a relay post, and Allen Whittington added two individual firsts. Next home meet comes Friday afternoon against Bartow.

Mount Dora Art League Outdoor Show Scheduled Saturday

The 39th annual Mount Dora Art League Outdoor Show will take place at Donnelly Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibitors bring painting with easels by 9 a.m. Admission is free. Last year more than 200 paintings by 70 painters were displayed. A student display will be judged with ribbons. Door prize is an oil painting by Margaret Tietjen. Utah Travelog Friday Night To End Series

James Forshee presents Fun in Utah at 8 p.m. Friday at the Mount Dora Community Building. The program profiles remote Utah locales from the Uinta Mountains to Rainbow Bridge, including Navajo Valley, Natural Bridges and Rainbow Bridge boat scenes, with humor and scenic imagery.
