The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce presents the closing entertainment for the Tourist Club season next Tuesday night led by Lehmann. The program wraps up the club’s activities with a featured speaker and ongoing chamber support for local tourism initiatives.
A Sunday evening program at the Methodist church features hymns and anthems under Mrs. C. M. Gudgeon on March 27 at 7 30. Selections include Onward Christian Soldiers The Solid Rock In the Garden The Holy City and Bringing in the Sheaves with solos and quartets. The event funds a new Methodist Hymnal purchase.
Mount Dora wins by four points over Orlando in a five team social bowling match. The women's Mount Dora team led by Mrs Maben and including Mrs Denbrader Miss Gould and Mrs Wyer won 22 to 12. Totals: Mount Dora 93 Orlando 89.
The Art League held an illustrated talk on Hungary at Lakeside Thursday evening led by H N Gallie of Eustis. The Lakeside Trio provided Hungarian music and Mrs Garvin and Miss Towne of Eustis performed Brahms dances. Members thank the University of Florida for slides and Mr and Mrs Richard Edgerton for courtesy. The April business meeting is set for the first Thursday at 3 pm at Miss Ter Armstrongs.
Volunteers of America organizes a tag day drive to raise funds for children in the state. Local girls under Mrs Jaheamaenrie Pike will run headquarters and solicit tag donations with sponsors including Rev Heber D. Ketcham Miss L. Graham and Mrs H T Fenn. Prizes from merchants reward top fundraisers and aid is offered for purchases displayed with tags.
Frank Hadlock purchases the Hoodelmier plant at the Highland Avenue site along U S Highway 441 and will operate under the name F M Hadlock. A disabled World War I veteran, Hadlock plans to shift from grain and feed to his own fruit business bolstered by the new plant and location.
Kiwanis members hosted an interclub event honoring guests including Har and Fred C. W. Parkes with speakers from the Florida District. The Audubon Society talk by C Russell Mason revived local interest. Florida Audubon, founded 1900 in Maitland, drives wildlife protection and bird conservation across the state.
The Lake County Flower Show organized by the Home Demonstration Agent Mrs. Lucie K Miller and the Lake County Council of Home Demonstration Club Women will run April 9 and 10 at the Court House. Local nursery firms and county groups will present elaborate displays with main decor by G W Pringle of Leesburg Nursery and Landscape Co. Officers include Mrs Lucie K Miller as agent and Mrs Betty Masten as president with several others serving as officers and directors.
Lakeside Inn reports a busy social season with luncheons at Mrs Page Laughlin’s for 12 and Ms Edgerton’s tea for 17, plus many dinners. The piece notes anglers enjoying big catfish and muds despite fishing seasons, and features a poem by Geo Sweetnam praising Lake Dora and Mount Dora views.
One week remains to file for homestead exemption. Applications must be submitted yearly by April 1 with the county tax assessor in the general courthouse at Tavares or with the city assessor or clerk for town listings.
George H. Sweetnam of Bedford Massachusetts and his wife spent weeks at Lakeside fishing Lakes Dora and Beauclair. He boated a 12 ½ pound female bass 26 inches long and 23 inch girth and a 13 pound male 28 inches long with a 20 ¾ inch girth. The first was released after weighing. The second was mounted to prove the tale. They returned home yesterday.
At the Yacht Club Wednesday night match point duplicate, Dr. A. R. Reitz and Frank Hadlock triumphed for the third week in a row playing north and south. R. K. O'Connor and Mr. Dana won east and west. Mrs. E. H. Martin held high score at contract.
Jean Smith daughter of Mrs Harriet Smith Mount Dora was appointed to the freshmen advisory board at Stetson University for the 1938 39 term. The honor places her among freshmen sophomores and juniors assisting the administration on new women programs at Holmes Hall on campus.
Local players allege neighboring towns use courts at night to cover lighting costs, preventing Mount Dora players from using facilities. The plan to adopt this practice elsewhere is discussed.
Local attorney Thomas H. Cooley declares his bid to succeed himself in the State Legislature Group 2. He cites a strong 1937 record as a member of key committees and a year of notable service in the last session.
The Stetson University Glee Clubs under Prof Harold Griffin performed as the Mount Dora Tourist Club's fifteenth season entertainment. The evening drew applause for Naughty Marietta and cornet by Carl Hulbert. Annual meeting followed with a treasurer report showing 140 balance. officers elected: President F A Poole, 1st VP George H Peabody, 2nd VP Jos H Brydon, Treasurer Nancy Stuart.
Mount Dora moves to replace an aging system with a common battery or automatic network. The council granted a 20 year franchise to Florida Telephone Corporation on first reading, with final passage likely on April 5. Otto Wettstein Jr promises installation by December first pending formalities.
The Mount Dora American Legion post invites members and guests to a birthday celebration at the Community Building on Friday night March 25. The note asks attendees to come in good spirits and dress in old themed attire as a nod to tradition.
Mrs. Elizabeth Jones of Toronto purchased the corner lot at Clayton street and the county line in Mount Dora. The 175 by 305 foot parcel with citrus trees fronts Lake Dora views and is in the Garden Club named premier home area. Sale made by J G LaDue.
Sonny Malone, 13, ran away from home Wednesday leaving a note. State police aided the search as a soaked boy was found Thursday morning in a store near Jem, where a kind shopkeeper recognized him and notified authorities.

Dr Gerald A Richardson director of Mount Dora Hospital has been elected Fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The award recognizes years of study research and at least one hundred deliveries and requires acceptance by the Professional and Educational Committee. He is the first and only Florida physician to meet all requirements.
