The issue announces a four day booster offer for subscriptions to earn mile credits, doubling the value until next Wednesday. Workers are urged to recruit new subscribers outside Mount Dora as new subs generate twice the credits of renewals, with prizes including a $935 Essex Challenger Coach.
Mount Dora Kiwanis Club will sponsor an March 20 entertainment program in the Community Building auditorium to raise funds for the Mount Dora Troop of Boy Scouts. The club pledges to meet the troop’s financial needs for the coming year and to support Scouting as a vital community asset.
The Tourist club enjoyed an evening of stage performances by Rollins Little Theater players, praised for high quality acting. Rain kept many away, but several hundred attendees were treated to exceptional work directed by Miss Thomas. The Cham ber of Tammette's Heath presided as President Howard Andrews was ill. Next, Mrs Paul Johnson’s Zellwood Folk Dancing class will perform with Danish and Swedish dances and a Mechanical Doll Chorus, plus the Zellwood Male Quartet.
Florida game department under Commissioner C C Woodward plans broad breeding of deer turkeys quail and pheasants to outpace hunters. A 40 acre Raiford prison farm will house most operations with selected prison labor. 5000 quail pairs will be trapped in state reserves and distributed after incubation to open country.
Mount Dora residents and winter colonists packed the municipal auditorium for a country school auction hosted by the Mount Dora Post of the Legion. Tommas Cooley impressed as substitute auctioneer, selling a stageful of items while comedians and musicians entertained. the event raised a neat sum for the Post fund and may become annual.
Plans announced by Mrs. T. H. Wallis for the Silver Jubilee celebration at commencement May 31 to June 4 mark the college's 25th anniversary. Reunions will bring together former classes, with the new library and gymnasium dedication on the Jubilee program. The event aims to be the largest in the college's history, and follows the forthcoming Golden Jubilee in 1955.
The Mount Dora Kiwanis club presents the Frolic at the community building auditorium on Thursday March 20 to aid Boy Scout activities. Proceeds fund the local Scout program with past success signaling a bigger turnout this year. The program features the famous Ebsen ballet soloist offering an hour of classic dance.
Fritz Heinz, 33, baker at the Last health resort at Tangerine, hanged himself Sunday. He tied a belt to a tree limb and jumped, despondent over wife desertion and ill health. A note asked a friend in Atlantic City be notified.
An educational meeting of citrus growers will be held in the Court House at Tavares Saturday evening March 15 at 7 30 under the Committee of Fifty. Open discussion will be allowed and several nominations for the Committee of Fifty will be voted on with the highest vote becoming the official nominee. Only Clearing House members may vote for nominations. all growers may attend.
Fire crews from Mount Dora and Apopka contained the blaze at the Laughlin estate residence after a midnight call from Zellwood. The large house and contents were destroyed while adjacent structures were saved from the flames.

Friends of Mr Robert B Little learn his Mount Dora native’s home near Contoocook New Hampshire was destroyed by fire a few days ago. Mrs Little and three youngest children escaped unharmed while Mr Little was away.
The Tourist club plans a large masquerade in Mount Dora at the community building on Saturday night. Elwood Carpenter leads the dance committee arranging an attractive event with a 8 30 start and 10 PM grand march. Prizes honor best costumes in elaborate funny and unique categories with Wise orchestra providing music. A vote on continuing dances through March will be held at the party.
Howey in the Hills engineers report Sugar Loaf Mountain near Howey at 362 feet above sea level as the state’s highest point while state geologist Herman Gunther cites Iron Mountain in Polk County at 324 feet in 1926. Other elevations noted include Argyle 245, Faceville 296, Fowltown 289, Mossyhead 265 feet. officials urged to officially record Sugar Loaf’s height.
Residents asked to donate partly worn quilts or comforts to the Community church Ladies Aid for Magnolia Home use. Bring items to church parlors by March 21 or notify Mrs. Mabel Cleary.
A gas explosion at an Umatilla Packing Co plant in Sorrento sparked a rapid blaze that destroyed four units of the packing plant and damaged multiple nearby stores including Allen Reynolds store Knight drug and O E White garage. Loss estimated at 48000 with 25 percent insured. Firefighters saved the A C L railroad station and several shops despite limited water supply.
