Harold Scogin of Mount Dora recounts a chlorine gas release at A. Duda and Sons farm in Zellwood on February 23 that sent 13 workers to Orange Memorial Hospital. He and another man attempted to seal a near empty chlorine tank and 150 workers were nearby when the gas spread.
Scogin, severely affected by chlorine, was treated at Orange Memorial Hospital after exposure that also injured secretary Elsie Heffner and others. Doctors used oxygen and IV injections as victims recuperated, with Scogin returning to work after four days in hospital. The nearly empty tank limited damage.
Mount Dora City Council approves a first reading to allow apartments in R-3 zones with council approval required for certain developments. The vote was 5 to 1 with Duke opposed. Cox was absent. The measure also requires council consent for hotels offices and similar structures in R-3. A separate 4 to 1 vote authorized up to 3600 for a city drainage study, unbudgeted by the district.
Mount Dora officials announce strict enforcement of city animal ordinances. No animals may roam after sunset or deface property. Unidentified animals found loose will be shot, while heathier animals with collars receive tranquilizers and three days in a kennel before possible euthanasia if unclaimed.
