Vaughn wins rezoning for Estates of Lake Gertrude
The Lake County Planning and Zoning Commission on February 25 approved rezoning 18.9 acres on Morningside Drive near Lake Gertrude from agricultural to residential. Stephen Vaughn Construction Company proposed the Estates of Lake Gertrude subdivison with 14 lots on the west side of the road. Vaughn stepped aside for the hearing and was represented by attorney J Carter Moore. The panel denied a temporary delay to study traffic and pollution effects, with Lake County Commissioners to review findings at their 2 p.m. meeting on Tuesday March 16.

Mount Dora fire crews responded to four alarms during a severe electrical storm that dumped nearly two inches of rain. A boat rescue near Lake Dora failed to locate a vessel, and a final call at Harris Oil and Gas involved a circuit breaker box charred by lightning.

A packed Mount Dora City Council debated the future of the Mount Dora Art Festival with plans to have the Planning and Zoning Committee propose a new site. Mayor Tom Champion defended the event while merchants urged street access. options included relocating north of Fifth Avenue or to Charles Avenue Gilbert Park. The meeting also advanced a beautification program and drainage fixes for East Town, with work on a culvert under Limit Avenue costing under $1,000.
