Sarasota farmer nets 5400 from Red Bliss potato crop

Farmer Tom Bell of Sarasota harvested 4051 bushels from 13 1/2 acres of Red Bliss potatoes with total sales of 5896.50. No.1 3511, No.2 360, No.3 180. Prices to Boston and New York were 150, 1.25, and 1 dollars respectively. Net returns about 5400 with production cost under 50 per acre.

Mount Dora Boys Camp Near Silver Springs on Weeklong Trip

A group of Mount Dora youths are camping at Silver Springs for a week after leaving Monday by boat. Carl Martensen joined the trip, traveling from Mount Dora to the Springs in nine and a half hours. They used Leon Martensen's motor boat and Dr. Wells' outboard, plus a towed row boat. The group includes Leon Mortensen, Donald Slack, Bobby Wells, Billy McCown, and Tommy Shipes, and they expect to return home Saturday.

First Grapes Shipped From Lake County

The first commercial grapes of the year moved from Lake county were shipped from Montverde on Monday, June 15, by Dr. R. W. Dickson. The white Waupanuka grape, highly regarded for flavor, marks the season with about 60 tons of Waupanuka and Beacon grapes expected, Beacon not until about July 1, with initial offerings in Eustis Mount Dora and nearby markets.

Stockholders of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Eustis will receive dividends on July 1 at 4 percent per year. The town ordinance requires rabies inoculation for all dogs by July 1. Unvaccinated dogs at large will be seized. Frank Drake is appointed to inoculate at his home Seventh Avenue and Alexander Street on Saturday June 27 from 9 am to 5 pm, charging $1 per animal.

Cooper-Wadsworth Model Orange Grove Near Lake Eustis

The hundred acre Cooper-Wadsworth grove, developed under J. C. Cooper at Mount Dora, lies in Mt. Homer in the Golden Triangle between Tavares and Eustis. It features orange plantings, 800 lime trees, a central tower, 1700 feet of cast iron pipe, and a power plant with water pumped by a motor to fill a tank in thirteen minutes. Golden Triangle to Have Complete Recreation Center

Lake county will host a new recreation center near Eustis Mount Dora and Tavares with a 120 by 160 foot central building, maple skating floor, dining for sixty, and capacity for 300 on the dance floor. A bath house, white sand beach, dock and spring boards will be built on Lake Woodward. Admission is free. Construction begins June 13 with a $60,000 investment and a prize for naming the center.

Air conditioned bed aims to cool sleep rooms

The Cotton Textiles Institute reports a bed with a built in refrigerating unit and cotton curtain to reduce the sleeping area temperature to about 65 degrees while the surrounding bedroom could be as hot as 100 degrees. The curtain can hang on bars at the head and foot of the bed to enclose the sleeper.

Kiwanis clubs of Eustis Mount Dora Tavares and Umatilla met in Mount Dora Community Building for a program of songs piano solos and greetings from delegates at the International Convention. About sixty six Kiwanians attended with readings a radio greeting cut short by static and a brief rededication ceremony.

The Lake County Democratic Committee held its first meeting after the first primary on Monday June 15 at the courthouse in Tavares to organize for the year. H C Duncan was unanimously re elected chairman, four nominations for chairmanship with a ruling that a woman from each precinct would hold the post, Mrs papal Gamble of Eustis elected, S H Bowman re elected secretary. Colin English appears to have won State Superintendent of Public Instruction over incumbent W. S. Cawthon. In the Fifth Congressional District Joe Hendricks seems ahead of J. W. Steed, figures not learned. In Lake County A. S. Herlong Jr. won County Judge over Harry P. Johnson, and D. H. Moore over J. W. Mosley for County Superintendent. Frank E. Owens defeated M. W. Watermelon Festival draws 7000 to Leesburg celebration

The 10th Annual Lake County Watermelon Festival drew about 7000 residents to Leesburg with a parade concerts by three bands and a coronation ball at Silver Lake Country Club. Candidates for governor and congress spoke from a joint platform amid county race discussions. Queen Elease Burton of Leesburg crowned at festival finale.
