Mrs Zell forwards a June 21 1943 note from Mount Dora Florida describing Observation Post gremlins and a donated eraser, new aircraft spotter materials, and updated sign in procedures for Tampa Filter Center. It cites praise for civilian spotters helping rescue army fliers and notes upcoming AWS insignia and medals for hours served.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Cameron and Mrs. Paris watched an unusual cloud in a deep blue sky above a dock. The cloud formed a V with the moon at its center, resembling a perfect story symbol as if the cloud split at the top. No other clouds nearby spoiled the view.
Before fighters take to the air they must be suped up. A stationary motor driven bicycle is pedaled by pilots to reduce nitrogen in the blood and prevent gas bubbles in the bloodstream.
A major land deal in Lake County involves Bowman & Brown Realty of Clermont and A C Quixley Realty of Mount Dora, selling over two thousand acres in Montverde. The Mount Dora resident owned 1170 acres in the tract, which will be developed for a new project and planted as quickly as possible after clearing and preparation.
Mrs Mary White will return to Mount Dora this fall from Bethel Connecticut. She has rented the Harvey cottage on Sixth avenue for September first. Her late husband R N White led local business civic life including the Chamber of Commerce and citrus advertising. Mrs White helped found the Woman's Club and helped organize it in 1919.
The Florida Defense Council, American Red Cross, and State Welfare Board sign an agreement declaring the local Defense Council commander as the responsible local authority during an enemy action disaster. The Red Cross supplies food clothing and shelter, while after the emergency the local District Welfare Board handles the needs of families.
Lake County reports twenty four firms participate in the Payroll Savings plan employing 1,109 workers.
The Treasury notes the loss of a torpedoed tanker while stressing that savings in War Bonds funded its construction and its 50,000 gallons of high octane gas. It urges continued lending to fund replacements as seamen risk their lives in the Atlantic campaign.

A Florida man filed for war ration book III listing ten children and, in the margin, announced Anna Ruth would be born on July 1, 1943 and apply for another ration book. The application was set aside for special consideration.

He says there are no Sundays or holidays and they work seven days a week while learning a bit of French. He hopes for an early end to the war and to return home. He notes good food but no ice or fresh vegetables and describes friendly local people fond of Americans. He criticizes U S strikes he sees as harming soldiers and praises those serving far from home. Clyde E. Wallace, third class petty officer, is at Camp Perry Virginia teaching rifle range. His wife Lurene Greene and their daughter stay in Mount Dora with her parents.
A brief wartime appeal urges civilians to back military forces and sustain the war effort on the home front through contributions, morale, and civic support.
A. C. Quixley Realty reports the sale of the J. G. Ray residence and the Thomas Finn home with next occupancy planned for September. New renters include A. S. Cox Gorham street and several others taking cottages or apartments around Highland Court Tremain street Shirley avenue Grandview street and Baker street.
June 25 to 30 1943 entries recount Allied air and sea actions in the Pacific and North Africa. Notable items include a Mitchell bomber raid on New Guinea destroying six enemy aircraft, Maj John Thornhill’s crew sinking a Japanese carrier and tanker near the Solomon Islands, and Attu Island landings as US forces seize greater Aleutian control. The period also notes Nazi deportations from Prague and the formal surrender of Gen Jurgen Von Arnim in Tunisia.
Eighteen young service personnel and local couples enjoyed a Sunday boat party aboard the City of Dora. They toured Lakes Dora and Beauclaire and the Dora Canal into Lake Eustis, with aquaplaning and swimming, followed by a supper served on board. Mrs. Charlie Dean and Mr. Dean were chaperones.
From Broad Channel Long Island New York County Agent R E Norris reports a prospective settler favoring Lake County Florida after a year of study. The couple hopes to buy a home and develop a place here this year or next, delayed by wartime travel. They received agricultural data and Chamber of Commerce details about Lake County.
What Young With A battlewagon loaded with various explosives bombs torpedoes oil and gasoline is not the safest place to be with a fire raging so all but the smaller ships of our Navy are equipped with elaborate firefighting apparatus it may be that this equipment never will be used during the entire course of the war but it must be paid for out of the War Bonds and Stamps that we are setting aside each payday.
Hon J Edwin Baker state senator from Lake County will speak on Florida Legislature proceedings at the Kiwanis meeting today. Red Kennedy gave a Flag Day talk last Thursday with a short history of the flag in observance of June 14th. Kiwanian James C Spooner of Fort Myers, former Mount Dora member, was a welcome visitor. A J Waltz won the attendance prize.
The Annie Terrentine fund has reached 195.75 dollars with contributions from northern and local donors. Arrangements are made to repair her fire damaged home next week and fund future costs including travel to Philadelphia for surgery. The effort aims to minimize costs and stretch every dollar amid high prices.
The Mount Dora Chapter No. 103 Order of the Eastern Star holds its regular meeting at the Masonic Hall this evening at 8 o'clock. This will be the last meeting until October. A cordial welcome is extended to members and visitors. Be an airplane spotter.
The U S Treasury urges voters to buy more War Bonds as the nation shifts from a one ocean navy of about 350 ships to a full ocean war. It notes the need to fund hundreds of Liberty ships and auxiliary craft to meet expanded naval requirements.
The Mount Dora Home Demonstration Club sponsors a community canning kitchen in the school cafeteria. Since June 3 twelve women have canned 685 No 2 jars and 6 quarts of vegetables including black eyed peas string beans lima beans corn and tomatoes. Supervisors oversee the work with records sent to county state and federal agencies. The facility, available to any woman without home canning facilities, requires advance booking and use of local school equipment.
The Navy recruiter will be at the Mount Dora Post Office on June 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to recruit boys age 17 and process applications of men 18 to 39 for induction through local draft, and men 38 to 50 for Sea Bees enlistment. He will work with volunteer recruiter Mrs. E. B. Kramer to take applications from women ages 20 to 36 for Waves and Spars enlistment in the Naval Reserve.
Five members of the local Methodist Youth Fellowship with Pastor Caxton Doggett traveled to the Methodist Highschool Institute in Enterprise Florida. Classes worship services and recreation programs are planned at the Florida Methodist Children's Home. Participants include Charles Javens Marilyn Johnson Grace Lee Lucile Harding and Donald French from First Methodist Church.
Lake County observers work on air spotter duty under County Director Campbell of Eustis. Some have resigned due to perceived low air raid danger, but most agree the service helps the army by freeing soldiers for active duty and aiding pilot training. Flash reports from posts have saved pilots and crews by locating downed planes on several occasions.
The Lake Region Packing Association at Tavares begins expansion after a strong season. A tangerine packing unit will be added at the highway plant, with Burleigh's former building torn down to join the current Lake Region facility for next season.
