Mount Dora resident Marie Baumgartner age 76 died this week at Eustis Hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Rehbaum chapel with Rev. George Gibson officiating. Survived by Orton of Miami Mrs. Mary Snyder of Pennsylvania and niece Mae Fenton of Mount Dora. Born in Canada she came to the United States in 1885.

Lake Counties Hear Legislative Excuses

Mount Dora and sister cities Tavares and Eustis hosted two state legislators at the Lake County League of Municipalities meeting. The session yielded no tax relief or new municipal funding as Sen. H. Buxton Family Reunites After 50 Years Across United States

Frederic J. Buxton and three brothers plus sister Clara Tyson, all in their seventies, completed an 8,670 mile US trip to Los Angeles for a long awaited 50th reunion. They then toured to Mount Dora and Hendersonville, visiting Sequoia, Yosemite, Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. The group praised their stamina and received a warm Rotary welcome in Los Angeles.

Boat Ordered In Hyacinth Battle

The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce committee ordered a government surplus boat from a New Jersey firm for 100 dollars. A cutter will be installed to destroy water hyacinth bulbs as part of a county funded effort. Work starts in July with Lewis Carroll volunteering to transport the boat.

Barker To Attend Paris World Scout Jamboree

William J. Barker of Mount Dora executive director of the Lake County Chapter American Red Cross and scout executive will attend the sixth World Scout Jamboree in Moisson near Paris. About 30 000 scouts from 39 nations expected. he sails from New York July 22 and returns September 1. It is unclear if a Mount Dora scout will also go.

Hopcraft Dora Named Acting Mount Dora Postmaster

Harry J Hopcraft, American Legion commander, has been named acting postmaster of Mount Dora by Washington. His official appointment follows the death of Clifford C Dooley on June 2 and awaits civil service clearance and arrival of department inspectors to review books. Norman L. Tuckett Jr. earned a plant operator license in water supply after a short course. He is son of Norman L. Tuckett of Sylvan Shores and returned to Gainesville to continue summer studies at the University of Florida this week as part of his path toward a public health engineering degree.

Watermelon Festival Draws 8000 Visitors in Leesburg

Eight thousand people gathered in Leesburg on Wednesday for the Florida Watermelon Festival despite clouds and intermittent rain. The First National Bank of Leesburg won the float contest with a parade led by the Leesburg High School band, followed by Lions Club and Kingley’s Hardware Co. A large crowd watched a coon hunt themed float by Ro-Mae Lumber Co. The oldest resident contest crowned 89 year old John V. Obereverbaltzer of Emeralda. 86 year olds Miss Josephine Cason of Wildwood and S. A. McEaddy of Yalaha finished second and third. Twenty seven beauty contestants represented Lake County with entrants from St. Petersburg, Lakeland, Daytona Beach and San Antonio.
