James Hamilton and Andrew Tomer take down Milner Rosenwald Academy signs as the school year ends. The Milner Rosenwald name is retired and Mount Dora Middle School is chosen as the new name for the sixth to eighth grade campus for next year.
Milner Rosenwald Academy ends its 44 year existence and will be renamed Mount Dora Middle School next year. The reorganization marks the first integration for the institution and signals broader changes in the local school district.
The Lake County School Board renamed Milner Rosenwald to Milner Rosenwald Middle School amid integration changes. Marvin Styles said the move followed a board decision prompted by plans to shift Milner Rosenwald to a middle school next year. No white schools have had names changed since integration, and debate continues on other name changes.
The Milne Rosenwald Academy was renamed Mount Dora Middle School last week. Some Black community members protested, saying the School Board promised the name would not change unless the borough’s name also changed.
In 1922 Duncan Chambers Milner of Mount Dora contributed 13000 to build a school for Negro students as the Lake County School Board then offered no Black education. The Julius Rosenwald Fund matched 13000 and Edgewood Grammar School was renamed by a community meeting led by Henry E. Dent.
