Leaf litter in forests weighs heavy and slows erosion
Forest Service investigators report a leaf blanket can weigh over a ton per acre and hold large amounts of water, reducing runoff and soil erosion. In Bent Creek near Asheville in 1930 dry leaves on half an acre weighed 1,300 pounds oven dry, with previous accumulations at 5½ tons per acre. Decomposition takes 2 to 3 years, and removing ground cover led to erosion despite light rainfall. Palmerto-Peninsular Canning Co. operates at full capacity. Winter Haver plans to locate a large citrus by products laboratory locally.
