In June 1971 experts warned Apopka waterways are dead as fish and alligators perish and green waters sweep shorelines. The ominous note raises fears Dora Lake may follow with similar ecological decline.
The Mount Dora City Council killed an amended ordinance aimed at aiding the Mount Dora Housing Authority to obtain low income housing. A chaotic meeting followed an hour of debate as Atlanta housing consultant Bron Cleveland explained HUD procedures and clarified land deed needs. The plan would have allowed a contract to convey city land to the Housing Authority only after preset conditions are met, delaying definite city commitment.
Mrs. Texas Frazier, a native of Orangeburg South Carolina and daughter of slave parents, marked her 100th birthday at Medic-Home Health Center in Mount Dora with a cake and punch party attended by more than thirty fellow patients. She lived in Sorrento for years and relies on a family bible for age, noting she sometimes feels well over a century. The piece includes local poetry and commentary on Lake Dora’s pollution and fish kill issues.
