The Mount Dora Police Improvement Fund Inc. begins a tax deductible campaign to add a rear annex to the police building. The project would create a training room squad locker offices for a photo lab I D room and Detective Bureau while avoiding city costs.
Leesburg High School teacher Keith Meredith announces candidacy for Lake County Schools superintendent. A 11 year educator with GM management background, he cites reading writing arithmetic focus and a conservative budget approach. Meredith and his wife Bernell have four children in the district. a fifth attends the University of Florida.
Charles Joseph Knowles of Leesburg announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the state House from District 4, challenging Republican incumbent Vince Fechtel. A former mayor and citrus grower with extensive local service, he highlights education crime reduction and prudent governance. He and his wife Blanche have three children and belong to local civic groups.
Lake County First Federal Savings and Loan Association completes a 400000 renovation of its Leesburg main office at 800 North Boulevard West. A new second floor houses a community room with kitchen, board room, drive in teller and 24 hour ATM, expanded Loan and New Accounts departments, executive offices, and a staff lounge. A bicentennial Landmark Mural depicts Lake County history. A preview party and public Lawn Party are planned for June 27 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Joan Brown of Leesburg announces candidacy for Lake County School Board District 2. A Florida native with teaching background, she cites teacher shortages and top heavy administration, urges collaboration among parents teachers and administrators, and vows progressive leadership to improve student discipline and basic skills.
Heritage Federal Savings and Loan Association of Daytona Beach wins approval to open a Mount Dora branch at Sixth Avenue and Donnelly Street in Compton Center. The office, funded with $255 million assets overall, will launch in 60 to 90 days with two to three staff and loans and savings services, a manager to be named. The new facility becomes the eighth office after seven in Daytona area. Approval came from the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in Washington D C.
Coleman Randolph, 10, of 523 Lincoln Ave, died in a Gainesville hospital last Friday from burns after a kerosene or gasoline explosion while lighting a wood stove. His one story home was badly damaged and his widow Cora survived.
Weather records show precipitation of 2.47 inches for the period since June 2, lifting the year to 20.24 inches. Data collected at the Mount Dora Fire Department weather station reflects this period's rainfall totals.
