The Mount Dora High School commencement at the Community Auditorium on Friday June 4 1943 includes processional Pomp and Circumstance. Speakers narrators choruses and solos precede the presentation of awards and diplomas followed by a reception for graduates.

City Council Deliberates On Water Free Use and Public Works

City council held a long session discussing water for war gardens, water waste by sprinkler systems, and funding for new fire hose, police car, and street improvements. Council members Morse absent. Kennedy addressed back taxes and transfers while several accounts and salemans were reviewed.

Band Boosters' Club Suspends Meetings Indefinitely

There will be no further meetings of the Band Boosters' Club until care of by the officers or the proper committees. The notice names the officers and committees as responsible for handling affairs during the hiatus.

Mrs. Mary W. Simpson 90 widow of David M. Simpson died after a six month illness at her daughter's home Mrs. Jennie Stovall. Services planned for Friday June 4 at 10 30 in First Baptist Church Mount Dora.

Community Church closes for season

Memorial Day service marked the closing of the Community Church for the summer. Services resume the first Sunday in October. Dr. and Mrs. Richards left by train for Lewisburg, Pa., to visit their son and family while he recovers from illness that kept him from the pulpit in late May. They left Mount Dora undecided whether to spend the summer with their son or later at their Bridgton Maine home.

Stuart Sadler to Graduate at Annapolis

Stuart Tees Sadler is named among about 760 midshipmen in the accelerated Class of 1943 to graduate June 9 at the United States Naval Academy Annapolis Md. Rear Adm J R Beardall superintendent announces the group which includes seventeen Florida men. Sadler will receive his commission as an officer a year earlier than the standard plan.

Gladioli Bouquet Highlights Mr Cadman’s Varieties

Mrs Cadman continues a hobby of testing gladioli varieties sending a bouquet to the office. Readier blooms include white yellow and mauve centers with deep velvety red and a bright yellow variety with salmon pink shading. Several stocks of the Picardy variety are included.

Mount Dora Band Wins First Division II Adjudication

The Mount Dora School Band earned a Division II adjudication at its spring concert. State Adjudicator Harry L. Parker praised the band’s confidence, precision, and musicianship led by Manuel J. Sedano. Frances Smith received special recognition for her flute playing.

Lions Club meeting at Mount Dora endorses Millard Conklin fund

The Lions Club held an enthusiastic Mount Dora meeting. Reggie Parker received a warm welcome after his winter. The club voted a donation to the Millard Conklin fund with an eye to an international presidency in 1936. Delegates praised the convention and Mount Dora hospitality.

J. L. Yates of Sorrento displays watermelons weighing up to 40 pounds, the Cannonball variety, as the first melons on the market from this section. Earlier shipments came from another part of the county.

Fire Rips Mount Dora Woman's Home Upon Grandview Street

Annie Terrentine, a longtime Mount Dora resident, lost her home and most belongings after a fire started by a defective flue in the kitchen stove. The blaze left the house uninhabitable and she awaits funds for surgery in Philadelphia to address a jaw condition. A relief fund has been opened with a $10 gift and further donations are urged at The Topic office.

Naval Reserves Visit From Atlanta Members

George Backus is home from Georgia Tech for a week's visit with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Backus. His guests John S. Thibodeau and Leon Shackelford, of Atlanta, are also Naval Reservists subject to call. They will return to Atlanta on Saturday.

New observers sought for night watches at the post

The Observer Register shows the 3 to 6 am shift was covered only on three days and substitutes filled other times. Volunteers are urged to join with Brown and others stressing defense value. The post uses screens and a spray gun against insects and notes the missing spray gun and red eraser, with a plea to return the eraser.

Mount Dora Plymouth Highway Set as Finest US Road

C Fred Ward of Winter Park states the Mount Dora to Plymouth section of U S 441 will rank among the nation s best road projects. The cement highway eight inches thick and 26 feet wide costs 725000 to 750000 with final bids around 653000 plus engineering costs. Grading by Faulk and Coleman is underway. substantial supplies and machinery are on site as the project nears completion in about six months. The work is funded equally by the State and federal government, with a temporary Mount Dora office opened for the project.
