After an alligator killed a white dog nearby, another gator attacked a small black dog on Lake Gertrude's northeast shore. Mrs. Dot Harmon found a dog’s outline and torn grass near her dock while the owner, Mr. L. S. Porter, was away. The gator has not been seen since the incident.
The J. P. Donnelly homestead on Donnelly Street Mount Dora has been listed on the National Register protecting it from demolition without federal approval. A dedication will be held next Thursday at 3 p m with Dr Jerrell Shorner attending. The 1893 house was built by Mount Dora’s early promoter and first mayor and later housed by F and AM Lodge No 238.
Mount Dora City Council rebuked the Park Commission for planting trees under power lines around town and debated who should handle maintenance. Officials discussed relocating a sewer lift, funding a lakefront line, and a $7,500 share for a 201 project. Fire and planning items were also reviewed as council advanced a vehicle title transfer for Chief Griggs emergencies.
The Mount Dora Park Commission appoints Mr. Harry Quinn to replace retiree Otto Hinz after five years. Mount Dora now has 70 privately funded oak trees added to the city’s 160 planted earlier this winter, with ongoing planting funded by donations to the Tree Replacement Fund at City Hall.
Mount Dora High School will have a new principal by the start of the school year on August 25. The current principal, Tom Sanders, moves to a new administrative post as area director of administrative services in Lake County District. He will liaise between the school board, principals, staff, and citizen advisory boards.
City Clerk Carl Fowler reads a Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club letter offering to cover all electricity costs due to the city's financial strain. The club president and secretary sign the proposal, as council members note the club uses city-owned facilities with free utilities. Separate notes mention district job postings in the Golden Triangle area and Mount Dora High School principal transition.
