Baseball notes say Mount Dora plays Clermont at 3 30 today and Eustis visits Sunday. Last Thursday's Winter Garden game was rained out and the spinsox game here against Apopka halted in the fourth inning with Mount Dora up 3 1. Fans urged support to lift the team on a winning streak.
Mount Dora Post No. 35 reports a July 11 meeting with Kenneth Rogers presenting a talk. A July 18 gathering in Eustis features Department Commander Bill Comer and La Societe des 40 Hommes et 4 Chevaux entertainers. The August 7 seventh district summer conference aims for about 150 delegates in Mount Dora.
Dr. Gerald A. Richardson argued in Cincinnati that artificial contraception is injurious to health and unreliable. He promoted the rhythm method as the only safe option and warned against chemical and mechanical devices, linking many cancers and cervicitis to their use. The remarks were delivered to the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians during the group’s preconvention gathering.
Mrs J E Beach of Mount Dora and Bridgeport Conn is reported in serious condition after a stroke during a stay in Maine. She was found unconscious at her hotel after breakfast on Friday July 8 and transported to a hospital where brain and right side paralysis were observed. she remained unconscious as of the latest report.
The front of Kimball's Garage in the town center is being repainted white by Curt Minkley and son. The project enhances the west side of Donnelly Avenue in the business district.
Frank Finzel moves to shift his hatchery operations from Sanford Road to a new cement block building on Highland avenue Mount Dora side of the overhead bridge. The structure will be 24 feet by one story, remodeling an existing site to house equipment.
Jon Ben C. Jones and Dr. R. W. Dickson represented the Lake County Red Cross at a Disaster Preparedness conference held at the New Smyrna Beach Chamber of Commerce on Friday July 8. Attendees included Robert E. Bondy National Director of Disaster Relief and other officials from the Weather Bureau Coast Guard and Florida Trucking Association.
The Home Demonstration women and 4H Club mothers from Lake Sumter Levy Marion and Citrus counties may attend a week of recreation at McQuarrie Camp. The camp runs August 15 to 19 or 22 to 26 with daily options and low cost. Applications must be filed by July 23 in the Home Demonstration Agent’s office. at least thirty registrants needed.
Walter Hancock Sr a Eustis meat market owner disappeared early Monday morning after turning on refrigeration and leaving in his car. Eustis police and search parties have scanned the countryside and broadcast his description and vehicle with no clues found by press time.
The Lake County Chamber of Commerce board annuls the August meeting, schedules the annual picnic style meeting for October 13 at Lakeside Park Clermont-Mineola, with lunch stands and a review of county highway issues. Membership reaches 1483 including Seneca, led by Mrs. Eugene Kraemer. Charles J. Anderson of Groveland spoke on highways and a permanent committee was formed. The meeting featured Lake County Florida color motion pictures to a full audience in the court house.
Florida Telephone Corporation prepares for dial system by building a central switching plant behind City Hall on Fifth Avenue. Crews laid cables from the old office above Cashwell's Walgreen to the new site. The new structure will house dial equipment and the grounds will be beautified to harmonize with the city.
Mrs. George C. Keller editor and contributor returned Saturday from California. She spent a month with relatives in San Bernardino to attend her niece Jean Cochran's wedding on June 18. Mr Keller joined her in Lake City and they traveled home together.
A state editorial advocates Florida enact a standard Drivers License Law a Highway Patrol and periodic vehicle inspections. It cites Illinois Mississippi progress and warns against aging poorly maintained cars, urging gasoline tax revenue be used for roads and maintenance.

The War Department has appointed Lemuel Chafin Downs to the Officers Reserve Corps as second lieutenant. Downs has served as associate editor and editor in chief of the Topic during the editor's California visit and is described as a splendid, well qualified young man.
Born July 23, 1887 on a North Carolina farm near Monroe, Boyce moved to Lake County Florida in 1911. A Monroe High School and Lake Forest College graduate, he is in his fourth four year term as tax collector and has been unopposed since 1924. He enjoys quail hunting, field trials, pointer breeding, and yellow rose as his favorite flower.
Decay forces the removal of Mount Dora's beloved central oak tree at Donnelly and Fifth in front of the Piggly Wiggly. By next week only a stump may remain, leaving a bare town landmark and recalling the town’s history from its heart.
The First Methodist Episcopal Church announces a summer program inviting all ages to Wednesday open houses. Parlors open 8 to 10 PM for informal games and singing to provide a clean social space during summer.
Misses Doris A Camp and Twila A Camp of Mount Dora are candidates for Bachelor of Arts in Education degrees at the end of the first summer session. Ninety four men and women are candidates for degrees at the close of this session on July 23.
Work is well underway on a new five room cottage on Johns street by W. J. Ferris. When completed it will belong to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Wise, son in law and daughter of Mr. Ferris. Johns street runs one block between First and Shirley streets, one block west of Highland avenue.
The Giri Diamond Ball team hosts Eustish at Heim Field tonight at 8 00 PM. Fans are urged to attend for a likely competitive game and local sports atmosphere.
Reads a Mount Dora School District 16 notice detailing roles for WPA staff and local officials overseeing a gymnasium project. Key figures include State Administrator Robt. G Lee, District Administrator Mikler, District Engineer Jack Brotchie, County Director Jet Taksch, and Labor Director Miss Takech. L. J. Mayor and Mrs. M. V. Simpson returned early Sunday after a month in Hot Springs Arkansas their vacation spot. They enjoyed the baths the city notes. Mayor Simpson has resumed his duties of office at the City Hall.
The Mount Dora girls diamondball team, under Eleanore Minkley, will debut against Eustis tonight at Heim Field at 8:00. About twenty five players have consented to play, hoping to boost Mount Dora’s first girls team.
Mrs. Jennie Hicks Frost, niece of Mrs. Ida Bishop and a longtime winter visitor, had brain base tumor surgery at the Mayo Brothers Clinic. A letter from Ida Bishop states Mrs. Frost is convalescing rapidly and expected to be discharged soon.
Promotion manager L. W. Marvin of the Florida Citrus Commission reports canned Florida orange juice distribution rivals canned grapefruit juice in central states. A Chicago survey found 91 percent of stores stocking orange juice, and a display at the National Retail Grocers’ convention in Cincinnati highlighted the blend of Florida orange and espen fruit juice.
Elmer Haskins and David Spilliard of Mount Dora won first in their hillbilly songs during the Lake County Amateur Contest elimination at the State Theatre Eustis. Freida Anz of Inland Beach took first in the second night. The top acts from both nights, including runners up, spoke on WDBO for Jaycee judges last Monday. The County Contest, to be held later in Orlando Beacham Theatre, was sponsored by the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and directed by the County Recreation Department with Clayton L. Perreault as director and MC.

Miss Jeanne Colley daughter of Dr and Mrs C S Colley travels with the Georgia Caravans from Atlanta on July 4 for a cross country tour lasting until August 25. The route includes Memphis Clarksville Ark Pueblo Colo Cheyenne Wyo Billings Mont Glacier National Park Mont Calgary Banff Lake Louise Jasper National Park Alberta Vancouver B C Palo Alto and Santa Monica Grand Canyon Amarillo Little Rock and back to Memphis. Lake County Chamber of Commerce will supply literature at points along the route to be left in hotels and interest spots.
Mr and Mrs A L Brown of Cincinnati Ohio purchase the J D Thyng property at 409 Grandview Street Mount Dora described as a very nice home. The deal was negotiated for the buyer by J G LaDue and for the seller by A C Quixley Realty Co. The Browns are nephews of Mount Dora resident Mrs H W Harlow.
Mrs Nellie Roberts returned home yesterday after two days at Lake County Medical Center in Eustis. She was admitted early Monday with a serious inflammation in her right arm, a problem she has intermittently endured for years. She rests easily and shows great improvement.
An electrical disturbance caused the lights to fail for about five seconds during a Tuesday night screening at the Princess Theatre. Swartz the operator says the outage was accidental, not part of the act, though it happened to fit a line about paying the light bill.
Karl Lehmann, secretary of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, has been notified by James E. West, Chief Scout Executive, that he was unanimously reelected as a Member at Large of the National Council. Lehmann has long served as a peacemaker and active member of the nation’s Boy Scouts in Lake County.
Frederick Sleight of the University of Arizona will discuss archaeology and share West experiences at tomorrow's Kiwanis program. Last meeting featured Thos H Cooley presenting on National Defense after a two week encampment at Fort Moultrie with O R C graduates. Reverend R W Acree attended as the visiting guest pastor. W L Story won the attendance prize presented by Dr E E Strickland.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce voted to sponsor a summer tennis tournament with a silver trophy for the men singles winner and cups for men doubles and mixed doubles. Defending players Tremain Norris and city champ Tremain compete as brackets are arranged. Registration is free at the Chamber office to start soon.
Mrs. C. E. Folsom formerly Miss Gertrude B. Gates stopped in Mount Dora to visit the Tremains and the Misses Carrie and Mamie True while en route from Atlanta to Orlando last Sunday. This was her first Mount Dora visit in twenty years. Edith Gates, the first teacher here, began in 1882, and Mrs. Folsom began in 1888.
Epworth League enters the second week of its drive for new members to expand its summer program. Last Sunday's initiation was hindered by heavy rain but a slight increase in membership was still noted despite the weather.
