James M. Lumpkin in ordnance service in Jackson Mississippi is home on a ten day furlough. Thirteen men including Grady Lanier Liles of Mount Dora and Lloyd Ray Jackson of Lake Jem were sent to Camp Blanding for induction. Andrew Sellers of Vidalia Georgia is overseas with the Naval Reserves. Alfred Carter serves in England with the U S forces and tennis is his hobby when off duty. Aviation Cadet Joseph M. Greene graduates from the 61st Flying Training Detachment in Avon Park Florida and advances to a Basic School. Jimmie Alderman, previously at Mount Dora Pharmacy, is in England with the U S Air Forces as waist gunner and navigator. Mrs Elizabeth Scott's son Thomas H Scott is in North Africa after seventeen months in the Army. He jokes about chicken dinners and GI food and mentions rugged conditions and sand flies. He also notes meeting the King of England and plans to attend home soon. A group of soldiers visited Mount Dora and a bomber navigator praised the visit. Mrs Scott received letters from her son detailing letters and his longing to return home. Mrs Gladys Carter received news of her husband Wallace A Carter earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for over two hundred hours of reconnaissance in the Southwest Pacific Area. The award covered flights from December 8 1941 to November 9 1942.
