Frederick Winfield Sleight son of Mr and Mrs Wmn C Sleight recently completed his preliminary U S Navy training and was assigned to the Naval Training School in Toledo Ohio for a sixteen week intensive yeoman course He has been selected for specialized training at the Storekeepers School due to aptitude and ambition He graduated last June from the University of Arizona and was active in Mu Alpha Nu Fraternity and the American Antiquity Society.

Navy Seaman Julian Drawdy Injured in Fall

Mount Dora youth and Navy seaman Julian Drawdy slipped in a hatch aboard the Receiving Ship in New York and injured his lower spine. He will wear a cast for eight weeks and is in Navy Hospital Brooklyn, after earlier discharge. He longs for letters from Mount Dora friends at Ward E-3, Navy Hospital, Brooklyn.

Mount Dora Forms First Red Cross Volunteer Unit

Mount Dora establishes its first Red Cross Volunteer First Aid Detachment led by D. D. Roseborough and Paul Hitchcock with help from Mount Dora High School students. Hitchcock also serves as Scoutmaster of Troop 19, the first Emergency Service Training Troop in Central Florida. The school earns kudos for producing numerous Advanced First Riders.

Mount Dora Bowls Over Orlando in Friendly Matches

The Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club hosted a series of friendly games against Orlando teams. Despite Orlando taking the men’s totals 107 to 84, Dorans won four of six men’s games and also the two women’s games. Individual results highlight close finishes and a sudden death by John A. Dexter’s passing clouded the day. The article also notes a women’s tournament commencing in January with a 29 to 9 decisive match and the roll of honors in defense stamps prizes. Mount Dora Needlework Guild Marks Ten Years of Helping Needy

Mount Dora branch of the Needlework Guild, a nationwide non sectarian organization headquartered in Philadelphia, celebrates ten years with Mrs Gerald B Hurlburt as president and 14 directors. The group holds its Ingathering in February, collects clothing and money for a shoe fund, and distributes garments to needy children in Mount Dora in cooperation with the King's Daughters. Members contribute two articles of clothing or a small cash amount to support expenses and national dues. Further notice will list the ingathering date and director names.
