Sylvan Shores Rezoning Clash Triggers New Council Action
The Sylvan Shores dispute over rezoning from residential to commercial focuses on Stivers Inc property annexed to Mount Dora. Spokesmen H D Rice and Lyman D Ritter challenge city authority, warning of legal action while council defers to Feb 5 and seeks a workable solution. The council then repealed the contested licensing ordinance 4 to 3, signaling a test case could be dropped and a revised measure studied.

Citrus Growers Seek Long Term FHA Loans After Freeze
Nearly 500 citrus growers met at the Lake County Agricultural Center in Tavares to adopt a resolution asking the federal government to relax Farmers Home Administration loan rules. They seek long term, low interest loans to recover from the freeze and forwarded the resolution to Florida Citrus Mutual directors, the State cabinet, and the Florida Congressional delegation. The FHA noted existing loans are short term for those unable to borrow locally. A second resolution urged IRS to ease deduction rules for freeze damage, noting that only tree damage, not fruit loss, is deductible and that growth retardation and lost groves are non deductible.
